Real Madrid 3-0 Man City: Josep Guardiola’s side’s hopes of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals end after a miserable night at the Santiago Bernabéu

Real Madrid star Federico Valverde has not scored in the Champions League for almost two years. He then scored a world-class triple in the 22nd minute that all but ended Manchester City’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

The Uruguayan midfielder produced one of the best performances in European history against Josep Guardiola’s side. He shook off Nico O’Reilly with his first attack and calmly evaded Gianluigi Donnarumma to finish.

Valverde then doubled his workload on the night, getting on the edge of the ball from Brazilian wideman Vinicius Junior. The Madrid midfielder then secured the match ball before half-time when he got on the edge of a lofted through ball, lifted the ball over Marc Guehi and tucked it home.

The hosts had a chance to further extend their advantage, but Donnarumma made the decisive stop to deny Vinicius Junior from the penalty spot.

Real Madrid head to the Etihad Stadium next week with a significant advantage, but German giants Bayern Munich could be waiting in the wings for the next game.

Guardiola’s side actually got off to a good start at Madrid before Valverde started to make his mark on the game. Two tempting crosses were deflected out of Erling Haaland’s reach, but Bernardo Silva’s lack of contact saved the hosts.

That’s when Valverde decided to come to the party. He took the lead with a simple finish evading O’Reilly’s attention on the right, past Donnarumma and into an unprotected net.

Just seven minutes later, he was in his element again when Vinicius’ pass bounced off Rubén Díaz and straight to Valverde. The midfielder then scored clinically with a low left-footed drive.

But his third was arguably his best. After a deft chip pass from former City star Brahim Diaz, Valverde lofted the ball over Guehi and calmly slotted past Donnarumma, leaving Guardiola and his team stunned.

It could have been even worse for the Premier League side in the second half, as a ball from the back sent Vinicius flying over City’s last line. He was taken down trying to skip Donnarumma.

However, the Italian made amends for his effort with a superb stop to prevent the winger from escaping from the spot. O’Reilly should have given City hope with 15 minutes remaining, but was frustrated by a superb save from Thibaut Courtois.

Defeat against Spain leaves City with a mountain to climb in next week’s second leg. A goalscoring show like Valverde’s could certainly help them move up the table.
