Arsenal are interested in Atletico Madrid centre-forward Julian Alvarez, who scored twice in the Champions League win over Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night.
Arsenal target Julián Álvarez has opened the door to a possible summer transfer after refusing guarantees he would remain at Atletico Madrid beyond the end of the season.
The former Manchester City attacker scored twice as Diego Simeone’s side defeated Tottenham in their Champions League last-16 tie against Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night.
After a thrilling seven-goal performance, Álvarez, who is also on the radar of Barcelona, was asked if he could guarantee that he would remain an Atlético player next season.
“I don’t know, I don’t know, maybe yes, maybe no. You never know. But I’m very happy here. You’ll ask me dead-end questions, but I’m happy,” he replied.
“I’m thinking about it every day and working on improving to be the best I can be here. I’ve never said anything bad about the club. I’m very grateful. People have also shown me love, so I’m very happy.”

However, Álvarez refused to be linked to Barcelona, adding: “I have nothing to say. It’s what’s being said on social media. A lot of things are being said, but everyone posts their opinion and it snowballs. I’m happy here, I’m very happy and I’m playing in all the competitions.”
Arsenal have been tracking the 26-year-old since his time at Manchester City and the Gunners will consider a summer swoop if the Argentine is available.
However, they are unlikely to be the only ones in talks, as Joan Laporta has already made it clear that he will pursue a deal with Alvarez if he is re-elected as Barcelona president.
Laporta recently told Catalan radio: “Julian Álvarez is not a player you can pay a lot of money for. He is a good player who is said to fit perfectly in Barça’s system, but he is not a player you have to pay a lot of money for.”

“First of all, he should show a desire to come. That’s what we want from all players who might be interested, and then there should be a reasonable price, which could be considered. But given the current demands, that would be out of line.”
Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has stubbornly denied having had any contact with any club regarding his client, who joined Atlético in August 2024 in a deal worth up to £82m including add-ons.
According to reports in Spain in early February, Hidalgo was in London and attended Arsenal’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. The player’s contract with Atlético runs until the summer of 2030.
