Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has revealed what really happened when Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign him back on the final day of the winter transfer window
Andy Robertson says he was the one who made the decision to turn down interest from Tottenham and stay at Liverpool in the winter transfer window, and has hinted he is open to signing a contract extension.
The 31-year-old veteran left-back emerged as a surprise target for Spurs in the final stretch of January, giving Robertson the chance to end his nine years at Anfield. The Reds were willing to listen to what the Scotland captain wanted to do, given the huge contribution he has made to the club since joining in 2017, before Joe Gomez’s injury complicated matters.
But in the end it was Robertson who made the decision to stay at Liverpool, which he admitted after Friday night’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Wolves.
And he hinted that he is open to extending his nearly 10-year stay on Merseyside, even though he is unlikely to be short on suitors at the end of the season when a move to Bosman becomes possible.

“There was obviously interest, there were discussions with both clubs,” Robertson said. “But the decision was that I wanted to stay, we stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision.
“It’s not that I wasn’t committed. I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight-and-a-half or nine years and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed. That’s always been my mindset. This club has given me everything and I’ve given everything to this club.”
“I hope it continues because it was a great relationship and obviously what happened in January, it’s gone now. We’re moving forward now and like I said, my focus hasn’t been interrupted to help the players on the pitch and in training.”
“Whatever was going on behind the scenes, it happened. All I can say is I stayed focused on football.”
Summer signing Milos Kerkes replaced Robertson in Arne Slott’s side this season, but the Scot broke the deadlock with some fine performances to help Liverpool reach the FA Cup quarter-finals at Molineux.
He stressed that while negotiations remain private, fans will be the first to know when news of the deal comes out.
Robertson continued: “I’ve always said[negotiations]will be between me and the club. I don’t think it will happen in public. That’s not one of them. I have great relationships with Richard Hughes, Mike Gordon and Michael Edwards.”
“I have a good relationship with these people and they brought me to the football club. They helped me become the person I am, so we’ve had a great relationship in that respect. I respect them and they respect me. After that, the conversation will be internal.”
“Once a decision has been made and we get closer to the point where there are only three months left on the contract, it will be announced to everyone.”
