Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah has endured a tough season, struggling to score goals and assists.
Mohamed Salah’s form has been a major concern for Liverpool this season. However, the catalyst for his downturn may be a controversial moment between the Egyptian and Trent Alexander-Arnold a year ago.
Back on March 10, 2024, as Liverpool were running away with a 20th top-flight title, Salah and Alexander-Arnold were caught on camera shoving and fighting each other during a training session.
Alexander-Arnold, who left Liverpool to join Real Madrid in the summer, looked clearly annoyed, but Salah seemed to see the funny side. He was seen laughing in the face of his former team-mates as Ibrahima Konate and Harvey Elliott intervened to try to defuse the tension.

Sources close to the team insisted the union was a light-hearted joke. The pair were also reportedly seen laughing and joking around the training ground, but Salah’s numbers since then tell a different story.
Salah helped the Reds win the Premier League last season, supporting Arne Slott. He contributed to 57 goals in all competitions and won the PFA Player of the Year Award, the FWA Player of the Year Award and the Premier League Player of the Year Award for the third time.

However, following the incident, Salah scored just two goals and provided one assist in the remaining nine games of his title-winning campaign.
This compares to the 27 goals and 17 assists he scored before colliding with his teammates. Salah signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool in May 2025, but his underwhelming results continued.
The former Roma man scored in the Reds’ 2-1 loss away to Wolves on Wednesday, but the Liverpool talisman has scored just eight goals in all competitions this season and provided the same number of assists. However, Salah missed most of January’s Premier League matches due to the African Cup of Nations.
Since March 10, 2024, Salah, 33, has scored just 11 goals and provided 13 assists. The winger’s poor form since the match with Alexander-Arnold could just be a coincidence, or it could be a broader issue related to Liverpool’s poor form since winning the title.
The relationship between Salah and Alexander-Arnold looked rosy before and after the clash. Salah jumped to the England star’s defense after some Liverpool supporters booed Alexander-Arnold during a game against Arsenal last May after he announced his intention to leave the club.
“I think for some reason the fans were being tough on him,” Salah told Sky Sports. “I don’t think he deserved it at the time. He gave everything to the fans, so he deserved the fans to treat him the best they could.”
“Yesterday, when we were saying goodbye, I told him not to make eye contact,” Salah added. “I really love him and I think he deserves a great farewell leaving the club.
“He’s done a lot for the city and a lot for the club. He’s probably one of the best players the club has ever had. He gave everything. I really wish him the best. I’ll always be in touch with him.”

The respect was mutual as Alexander-Arnold publicly supported his former Liverpool teammate following his controversial comments after Salah was left out of the squad for several games in December.
Salah shared a wordless Instagram post with a graphic highlighting his status as the player with the most goals and assists for a single club in Premier League history. The full-back responded to Salah’s Instagram post with a goat emoji and praised the Liverpool forward for being the “best of all time”.
