Arne Slott’s struggles in the final third were once again brought into question as Liverpool lost in stoppage time to Wolves as the Reds found it difficult to break through the Premier League underground.
Arn Slott claimed that Liverpool’s failure to make the most of their chances from open play was a loss at Wolves, but that it “summed up their season”.
The team at the bottom of the Premier League beat the Reds with the winning goal in stoppage time to seal another memorable victory and end their Champions League hopes. Liverpool came back to equalize, but conceded again in the final stages.
Liverpool’s goal came from a mistake, allowing Mohamed Salah to score for the first time in more than 100 days. Otherwise, chances were few and far between, with Slott admitting that he struggled to break through teams when they were sitting deep.
It’s a drum he’s been beating all year, bemoaning the poor blocking the team has to face and once again highlighting the team’s inability to make the most of possession.
“It’s the same old story. Lately we’ve been scoring more from set pieces and we’re winning more points, but what hasn’t changed in the last five, six, seven games is that we’re struggling because it’s very difficult to score from the open play chances that we create,” he said.

“From the possession we had, we didn’t have as much as we would have liked, but we had enough, much more than the other team. But in the end, we scored one, they scored two. And in fact, in extra time, we scored another. So this game also summed up our season.”
Liverpool remain in the fifth and final spot for the Champions League, but could jump up the table if Chelsea beat Aston Villa on Wednesday night. The champions have suffered a notable downfall, with the comeback at Molineux being their ninth this season, five more than last season.

Skipper Virgil van Dijk said: “We had most of the ball today, but I still think we made some bad decisions and couldn’t find the final product. At the end of the day, it’s just a shame that we lost it today.”
Liverpool have failed to address some of the tactical pillars that are fundamental to their success, and Jamie Carragher has highlighted their inability to deal with a team at a disadvantage.
He recently said: “The thing that really worries me about Liverpool in terms of actually qualifying for the Champions League is that given the three big things you face in the Premier League: set-pieces and long throws, unsuitable counter-attacking football and when you’re a top team like Liverpool you face low blocks. Liverpool can’t deal with any of those things.
