Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been working hard on the fitness of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw ahead of the Premier League game against Newcastle
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick will give Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw extra time to prove they are ready for Wednesday’s game against Newcastle United after they were forced to miss out during the win over Crystal Palace due to illness.
Shaw was substituted midway through the first half and replaced by Nusiar Mazraoui, while Maguire was sent off midway through the second half and replaced by Aiden Haven. Neither defender was injured and Carrick confirmed both were unwell.
Both players are included in the squad that travels to Tyneside on Tuesday afternoon, with United’s interim manager now optimistic that they will be well enough to keep their places in the starting XI against Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Asked whether Shaw and Maguire would be suitable, Carrick told the Manchester Evening News: “We hope so. We’re working towards that.” “They haven’t been feeling too good so there’s still some time before the game and we need to see how they feel. Of course we’re going to give them every chance.”

“It wasn’t an injury. We both weren’t feeling very well. That’s one of the really important things, but we’ll have to see how it goes today and tomorrow morning.”
United could be without Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount at Newcastle, with both players yet to return to full training. Martinez has missed the last two games with a calf problem, while Mount has missed five games due to an injury sustained in training.
Matthijs de Ligt has not featured for United since the end of November as he continues to manage back issues. Newcastle, on the other hand, may have to deal with a number of absences heading into this game, with striker Nick Waltemaide likely to be unavailable.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe said: “Nick has fallen ill.” “There is a possibility of illness in the team. He has not trained, but we will give him every chance for tomorrow.”
“Jacob trained well yesterday. Tino Libramento is getting closer and closer. This game may be too early for him, but we are very keen for him to be available.”
