Bruno Fernandes will decide on his next move at the end of the season, but it will depend on Champions League qualification and Michael Carrick staying.
Bruno Fernandes will not seek confirmation on Manchester United’s summer contract before deciding on his future.
The United captain is under contract until 2028 but could leave Old Trafford in the summer. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other executives are keen to keep Fernandes and are hoping to extend his contract.
The club have made their feelings clear for the Portugal international, with United saying they are willing to hand Fernandes a new and improved contract worth £400,000-a-week.
Fernandes, who turns 32 in September, knows his next contract could be the last major contract of his career. And he wants to know that United’s ambitions match his own when it comes to the club’s chances of winning major trophies.
But despite his influence as captain, Fernandes is unlikely to ask the club’s leaders who they intend to sign. United are targeting the likes of Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton and Newcastle duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães.

Fernandes is thought to be basing his decision on whether United will qualify for the Champions League next season. Meanwhile, Fernandes is also keen to see if United will appoint Michael Carrick as the club’s permanent manager.
Fernandes has been impressed by the influence Carrick has had since taking over on an interim basis and has developed a strong relationship with him.
Fernandes plans to wait until the end of the season before deciding on his next move. He is scheduled to meet with club leaders before heading to the North American World Cup with Portugal.
Fernandes is operating in a strong position in negotiations given his influence in the dressing room and continued value to the team.
The former Sporting Lisbon star has been United’s best and most consistent player in recent seasons. Last summer he rejected a number of big offers from Saudi Pro League clubs but chose to remain at United.
United remain confident of convincing Fernandes to stay, but know they have little to no chance if Carrick fails to secure a top-four finish.
