Graeme Souness was due to return home in time for Sunday’s Old Firm clash between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox, but is now stuck at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Graeme Souness has revealed that he is trapped in Abu Dhabi following Iranian attacks on Middle Eastern countries. Liverpool legend Souness shared a chilling update on social media while stranded at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The 72-year-old described how he was about to leave the country with thousands of Brits in the Middle East when he heard a “loud bang” overhead. The chaos was sparked by the US and Israel launching attacks on Iran on Saturday morning.
In response, Iranian forces attacked U.S. military bases or locations in U.S. allies, including Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Souness flew to the United Arab Emirates just three weeks ago to serve as Liverpool’s ambassador.
The Scot is currently in Abu Dhabi but unable to return home. Souness posted a video to his Instagram followers, writing: “Currently at Abu Dhabi Airport in the Middle East, just wanted to give you a quick idea of where I am.

“That’s my plane. It’s the plane I’m going to be on to fly back to England. When I was little, my mother said to me, ‘Be patient, you’ll never have a dull moment, no matter where you are.’
“So this weekend it was the biggest game of the season for me, Rangers vs Celtic, and I was thinking if Rangers won I would be in for a big performance.
“My mother said, ‘Son, there’s never a dull moment anywhere.’ Well, I’m at this airport, and I hear a pretty loud bang. It’s the sound of a missile intercepting a missile that’s being fired at some American military base.”
Souness added: “The chaos continues. Flights have been canceled and we can still hear the explosions, so we’re giving up. We’re going to check into a hotel for a few nights and find out where we are. Hopefully, this situation calms down and we can get back on the plane.”

“I get grumpy when I’m late or do something at the airport, and as grumpy as I am, I think you should be thinking about the people who might even die at this point. Anyway, I’ll keep you posted.”

US President Donald Trump has targeted Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, saying “many” of Iran’s leaders have left. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) added that it had “eliminated” the Iranian regime’s defense leadership with the “opening salvo” of the attack.
