Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with his current contract due to expire on June 30th, but no decisions have been made behind the scenes.
Manchester United are confident they can find a compromise that will allow Harry Maguire to remain at the club beyond the summer. Maguire’s current contract expires at the end of June, but his future is up in the air and no decision has yet been made.
When Ruben Amorim was still in charge, it seemed likely that Maguire would be allowed to leave on a free agent in the summer. However, the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager has given Maguire a new lease of life at Old Trafford.
The 32-year-old defender started all five of Carrick’s games in charge, helping Carrick to a record of four wins and one draw while renewing his partnership with Lisandro Martinez. The improved form has put renewed emphasis on negotiations over the future of Maguire, who has been at the club since 2019.
Maguire is one of the club’s highest-paid players, earning around £180,000 a week, but is vulnerable given Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s desire to cut costs. However, BBC Sport reports that behind the scenes at United they are confident a solution will be found to keep Maguire.

That is likely to mean both a pay cut and a short-term contract, perhaps just to cover the 2026/27 campaign period. His future could depend on whether the club’s higher-ups decide to keep Carrick on as long-term manager.
Maguire will become a free agent when his contract expires on June 30, and was allowed to negotiate with overseas clubs in January. His agent reportedly spoke to AC Milan, but Carrick’s arrival to replace Amorim, who was sacked on 5 January, meant nothing.
Carrick’s appointment and Matthijs de Ligt’s injury come at a good time for Maguire. Maguire still has his sights set on joining Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup. And with Casemiro leaving as a free agent in the summer, there is also the idea that United will want to keep another experienced player in the dressing room.

Former United defender Wes Brown has explained what Carrick thinks of Maguire. “Would Michael Carrick want to give Harry Maguire a new contract? 100 per cent,” he told BettingLounge.
“I love Harry Maguire. When people were giving him a lot of stick, they didn’t look at the facts. They only saw that he wasn’t quick or anything, but Harry is a very good player, an absolutely fantastic player in the air. He gives 100 per cent in every game. He’s almost always in the right position. He has a huge amount of experience at all levels of the game.
“If Amorim was still active, Maguire definitely wouldn’t have signed a new contract. But we’ve got Michael Carrick, Harry is playing, we’ve got De Ligt, Yolo and some good young defenders. So it’s a big decision. If it was up to Michael, you’d want to keep him because I think he’s proven he can get the job done. It’s a no-brainer.”
