Arsenal were once again flagged for excessive celebrations as Chris Sutton highlighted his reaction to the big north London derby win against Tottenham.
Chris Sutton has insisted he is “a bit concerned” about Arsenal’s reaction after the North London derby, fearing it could reignite controversy over excessive celebrations.
The Gunners had to endure a lot of criticism on Wednesday after surrendering a 2-0 lead to a draw against Wolves at the bottom of the Premier League. This closed the gap at the top of the table, and before kick-off against Tottenham they were just two points ahead of Manchester City.
They put in a timely performance, winning 4-1 and beating their rivals on their own patch. Ebelesi Eze and Victor Gökeres both scored twice, with Arsenal’s players scoring at full-time in front of the away cheering squad.
Sutton told the BBC: “It’s a bit worrying that the Arsenal players are celebrating too much. Let’s celebrate at the end of a season where we won the title.”
Arsenal are under pressure to make this year their year after several near misses. Mikel Arteta has achieved three successive second-place finishes, part of a campaign in which the Gunners surrendered the top spot later in the day, with the final trophy set to be up for grabs in 2020.

Jamie Carragher faced criticism from the Arsenal faithful after seeing off Liverpool in 2024. Martin Odegaard ended up posing for a photo of the club’s cameraman with a Sky Sports pundit and saying: “Go down the tunnel, we won the game, three points. You were great, you’re back in the title race. Come down the tunnel.”
Odegaard later responded to Carragher, claiming: “If we are not allowed to celebrate when we win a match, when are we allowed to celebrate? We are happy with the win and will remain humble.”
The incident sparked a debate over what constituted excessive celebration and whether Arsenal players had the right to celebrate a big victory. Arteta’s emotional response has seen City win four of their last five games, and Sunday’s victory was certainly timely.
He said: “This is not a job. It’s much bigger than that. It’s our purpose and what we want to do. It’s very rewarding. Football today shows that we keep moving forward! It’s worth doing with the people we have at this club.”
