Swedish politician Mikael Danberg used Tottenham as an analogy for Sweden’s economic woes and branded them both “spacy” in a stunning speech in Parliament.
Swedish politician Michael Danberg offered an unusual criticism, comparing Tottenham’s plight to his own country’s economic woes. In what appears to be an official parliamentary address, Mr Damberg used the north London club as a curious but seemingly apt comparison for how Sweden has fallen, and is likely to continue to decline.
When speaking on the floor about Sweden’s challenge, his remarks are translated into English: “I naturally think of Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, one of England’s most prominent and richest clubs, with a huge stadium, a dedicated and large supporter base, and everything that would be considered a ‘first team’.”
“Nevertheless, Tottenham are in crisis. They are fighting at the bottom of the table, just a few points above the relegation zone. Not because they lack resources or profits, but because they are wasting opportunities.

“They’ve lost direction and stability because they’ve made bad decisions, been jerky overall, and thought short-term.”
“This club has the name ‘Sparcy’. It’s when you have a chance but you don’t get results. Mr Speaker, that’s exactly how the Minister of Finance deals with the Swedish economy.”

“Sweden has the power, the capabilities and the resources. We have the companies, the workforce and the ability to innovate. The conditions are right for the Swedish economy to thrive.”
He added: “The government risks turning Sweden into a ‘Spurs’. That’s no good. Sweden can’t perform like Tottenham.” To be frank, Danberg’s assessment of the club is not far off, and its repeated bad decisions have put it in a dangerous position.
Following Thomas Frank’s disastrous run of just two wins from 17 Premier League games, Igor Tudor was appointed as interim manager with the sole aim of getting Tottenham out of the mess and out of the drop zone.
The escape attempt begins this Sunday afternoon with the incredibly daunting prospect of a north London derby against league leaders Arsenal.
In his first press conference as manager, Tudor briefly mentioned the game, but also mentioned the problems already facing him and potential solutions.

He said: “The situation is not easy because, as you know better than me, we have a lot of injured players. So we first need to find the best system that suits the players available at the moment.”
“So, a very special moment. It may sound strange, but I believe that what we need to focus on is training. So training from today, that’s the key, because as I always like to say, Sunday and the game are the result of training.”
Two players from the Swedish national team, Lukas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski, are not eligible for selection. Given this, it is expected that both men will be mentioned when Damberg’s remarks are discussed.
