A former footballer and three others have been charged with attempted murder after a man was shot dead in a driveway in Huyton, Liverpool. On Friday, November 28, a man in his 20s was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Reports say the victim was shot twice by two men on a Thurlon motorbike at an address on Radway Road. Four people were arrested as a result of warrants being executed across Nordsey, Sefton and Liverpool on Thursday 19th February.

Former Accrington Stanley midfielder and boxer Patrick Sean Lacey, 32, of Manor Avenue, Crosby, was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to murder and possessing a shotgun and ammunition with intent to endanger life. Section 18 GBH; and conspiracy to cause GBH.

Johann Aaron Jones, 35, of Stamfordham Drive, Allerton, John George Patrick Hughes, 31, of no fixed abode, and Bernard Flynn, 61, of Knowsley Road, Bottle, were also charged with similar offenses. All four are due to appear at Adult Remand Court in Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton and St Helens this morning (Friday, February 20).

Lacey started his career at Tranmere Rovers before going on to play for Manchester United and Liverpool during their academy years. He went on to play for Chester, Altrincham, Barrow, Accrington Stanley and Southport, with his most recent team thought to have been Flint Town.

During his career as a soccer player, Lacey also fought professionally as a boxer, compiling a record of 10 wins and 1 loss. He lost on points to Jack Swallow in February of this year.

Detective Inspector Chris Clark, from Merseyside Police’s Firearms Investigation Team, said: “These linked warrants were executed as part of an ongoing investigation and all four will appear in court today.”

“Our work continues and we would ask anyone who has not yet come forward to please continue to do so and please do not assume we already have the information.

“Our team will assess it and take appropriate action. We encourage anyone with first-hand accounts, dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or other footage to come forward.”
