The investigation into Ruben Amorim’s nightmarish reign at Manchester United continues, with Gary Neville naming his ‘worst decision’ of his time at Old Trafford.
Gary Neville says Reuben Amorim’s reluctance to hire Koby Mainu was the former Manchester United manager’s “worst decision”. Mainu, 20, did not start a single Premier League game this season until Amorim was sacked on January 5.
Since then, the midfielder has been a constant feature under caretaker manager Michael Carrick and was the driving force behind United’s four-game winning streak. Mainoo is also making a belated bid to rejoin the England squad in time for this summer’s World Cup.
During Amorim’s time in charge, the academy graduate believed he needed to change clubs to get the game time he needed to be seen by England manager Thomas Tuchel. Because of his performance, Neville believes Amorim’s decision not to give Mainu points in the team contributed to the Portuguese’s downfall.
“Koby Mainu didn’t really even get a chance under Ruben,” the United legend claimed on Stick to Football. “When I think about it now and look at the main players in this team, it looks like the worst decision Ruben Amorim has made.”

Following Amorim’s sacking, Neville accused the former United manager of “murdering” Mainu. “I have to admit, I never liked the way Mainu was treated,” he said.
“I think we talked about that a lot on this show. I never liked how it was handled. When he (Amorim) said it was him or Bruno (Fernandez) at the beginning of the season, I never agreed with that.”

“That’s what killed Coby Mynoux. It killed him in public. And apart from the cup game against Grimsby, he didn’t have him in the team at all.”
Mainu will hope to continue proving Amorim wrong when the Red Devils travel to Everton next Monday. Further solid performances could increase his chances of being selected in Tuchel’s squad for England’s two friendlies in March.
Tuchel recently confirmed the 20-year-old’s “return” along with United team-mates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw. Speaking during Thursday’s Nations League draw, the Three Lions manager declared: “It’s great to have[Mainou]back on the pitch. He’s a huge talent.”
“He’s already played in the tournament from start to finish for England and he’s back. So is Luke Shaw, so is Harry[Maguire]. There are some players who have suddenly come back, but they’re playing in a back four now and playing a different style that fits into our set-up a little bit better at the moment. It’s good competition.”
