Sir Jim Ratcliffe has come under fire for his comments on immigration, with Manchester United’s Muslim Supporters Club responding to his comments in a statement.
Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club (MUMSC) has issued a statement following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s controversial comments on immigration, in which he claimed the UK was “colonised”. In an interview on British politics, Mr Ratcliffe insisted the government needed to make “difficult” decisions. It is said to be the same kind of choice his Ineos government has already made at Old Trafford.
United’s co-owner told Sky News: “If we really want to tackle the big issue of immigration, where people choose to take benefits rather than work for a living, we’re going to have to do some unpopular things and show courage.”
“You can’t have an economy with 9 million people on benefits and huge numbers of immigrants coming in. So Britain is colonized. It’s too expensive. Britain is colonized by immigrants, isn’t it? So the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020 and now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million.”

In response to Ratcliffe’s divisive remarks, MUMSC posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) in response. The statement emphasizes United’s identity as a diverse, global club and calls for leadership that brings people together rather than creates division.
“We are deeply concerned by comments that describe the UK as being ‘colonized’ by immigrants, as well as positive references to politicians whose comments about immigrants and minority communities have long caused divisiveness,” it said.
“The term ‘colonized’ is not neutral. It reflects the language often used in far-right narratives that frame immigrants as invaders and demographic threats. Such rhetoric has real-world consequences.”
“The UK has seen a continued rise in hate crime in recent years, including Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racially motivated attacks and growing hostility towards immigrants and people of color.

“Public discourse shapes public behavior, and when influential figures adopt language that reflects extremist talking points, they risk legitimizing bigotry and deepening divisions.
“Manchester United is a global club built on diversity, with players, staff and supporters of all backgrounds, faiths and ethnicities. The strength of our club, and our country, lies in our diversity.”
“Debates about immigration policy are legitimate, but they must be conducted responsibly and without using language that marginalizes communities or reinforces narratives associated with intolerance.
“We stand with all communities who reject racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and all forms of hatred, and we call for leadership that unites, not divides.”
