Liverpool have had a disappointing second season under manager Arne Slott, but the Dutchman has confirmed he could seal his future at Anfield.
Arne Slott believes there is no guarantee he will continue to work at Liverpool beyond this season if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League. The Dutchman enjoyed a dream debut at Anfield, helping the Reds win the Premier League on his first try.
However, they have not been able to reach those heights this season and following defeat to Manchester City at the weekend, Liverpool sit sixth in the table, already 17 points behind leaders Arsenal. Slott’s team currently faces a battle to qualify for the Champions League.
Asked whether missing out on qualifying for the contest would be crucial to his ability to keep his job, Slott said: “It’s a difficult question for me to answer because I haven’t decided on my future. The only thing I know is that it happened before and recently and it didn’t affect the manager’s future.”
“But, of course, that doesn’t guarantee anything. In general, the manager in particular at this club, and probably at other clubs, is not only concerned with results. Primarily, but not only.
“Some clubs also look at the progress of players and the progress of the team, and sometimes the situation is taken into account.

“It’s not every club, but I think I work at a club that looks at that, as it did in the past when clubs missed out on Champions League qualification.”
Liverpool will be looking to regain momentum into the top four when they travel to Sunderland in midweek. Ahead of that game, Wayne Rooney suggested Slott could be sent off from Anfield if he fails.
“Well, I think there will be a little more pressure on Arne Slott. Now they have to fight to qualify for the Champions League. So, yeah, I think there will be pressure on Arne Slott.”

“I don’t think they will change anything now, but it will be very interesting in the summer. Arne Slott’s job may depend on whether he finishes in the Champions League or not.”
Slott’s current contract with Liverpool is a three-year deal after joining from Feyenoord, and is expected to run until the end of the 2026/27 season. The last time Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League was in 2022/23, when they finished fifth under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
