Thomas Frank was sacked as Tottenham Hotspur manager after just 26 league games.
The Dane’s fate was sealed after a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday.

The 11th defeat of the season left Spurs in 16th place, just five points above the relegation zone, without a win in their last eight league games.

Spurs said in a statement: “The club has made the decision to change the position of men’s head coach, with Thomas Frank retiring today.”

“Mr Thomas will be appointed in June 2025 and we are determined to give him the time and support he needs to build our future together.

“However, the results and performances have led the board to the conclusion that changes are necessary at this point in the season.

“During his time at the club, Thomas has acted with unwavering commitment and done everything he can to move the club forward.

“We would like to thank him for his contributions and wish him continued success.”

Spurs hosted Aston Villa in this season’s FA Cup and faltered at the first hurdle, before being eliminated by Newcastle in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

However, Frank managed to lead the North London side to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after finishing fourth in the league.

The 52-year-old joined Spurs on a three-year deal in June last year after more than six years as manager at Brentford, replacing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout.

The Australians led Spurs to UEFA Europa League glory last season, but they also endured their worst season in history, finishing 17th in the Premier League with 38 points.

The North London side then got off to a strong start under Frank, taking 14 points from their opening seven league games this season and sitting in third place.

However, they endured a dramatic slump after that, taking 15 points from their next 19 games.

Spurs have been without a win in the league since the start of the year, with the draw against Burnley and defeat at home to West Ham United perhaps being the most damaging.

Their home form is of particular concern, as they have picked up just 10 points from 13 league games played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, with only Wolverhampton Wanderers taking points at home.

This record turned many home fans against Frank, who often faced jeers from supporters and chants calling for his sacking.

Tuesday’s game against Newcastle was no different, but Frank was confident he had the backing of the club hierarchy on a full-time basis.

Asked by TNT Sports if his job was under threat, Frank said: “I talked to them (the owners) yesterday, so no.”

Asked afterwards if he would take charge against Arsenal, Frank added: “Yes, I’m sure he will.”

Frank has had to battle a series of injuries during his tenure, including the long-term sidelines of key attackers Dominic Solanke, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski (the latter two have yet to feature this season).

Former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto de Zerbi is one of the candidates to replace Frank, who parted ways with Marseille earlier on Wednesday.

Former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, now in charge of the United States national team, has also been linked with the role, along with Oliver Glasner, who confirmed last month that he would leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season.

Spurs have a 12-day break ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round tie, but will then be tasked with lifting themselves out of the drop zone by hosting league leaders and rivals Arsenal.
