Arne Slott claims Liverpool have only won “the first three games” in Premier League football this season – “that’s a credit to the players”

Slott looks back on Man City defeat with ‘angry and disappointment’

Arne Slott said that despite Liverpool’s disappointing season, they have only been behind in the first three games this season, but his players still feel they can “compete with other teams”.
Liverpool, who lost to Manchester City on Sunday, have won just one of their last seven Premier League games and are in sixth place, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.

However, the head coach believes that their performance was more justified, and of the different away games, only the first half of the three stands out as a situation where they were clearly not the better team.

“I have to give a lot of credit to the players because we’ve had so many setbacks and hits so far,” Slott said ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Sunderland, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

“Many times we didn’t get what we deserved, but they came back every three days and gave us a good performance.

“It doesn’t always lead to wins, but I’ve said it many times, but I think there were only three games in the first half this season where the opposing team was much better than us.

“In the first half, it could have been Crystal Palace, Man City and maybe Arsenal away, but that was part of the first half. That’s a credit to the players, because they’ve had setbacks time and time again this season.”

Liverpool overcame a tough opening game at the Emirates Stadium to pick up one point, but lost both games to Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

Despite not winning a league game this year, the Reds have not suffered a major loss, although they suffered a draw at the beginning of January.

But Slott and his players understand that any drop in points is a sign of a lack of performance at a prestigious club like Liverpool.

“I feel like a draw is a loss at this club,” Slott said. “It’s definitely not easy for the players… We’re not up to Liverpool’s standards at the moment so the players feel that disappointment.

“The main reason is because every game is close. Every game it feels like we can win but it doesn’t happen.

“And it’s probably more difficult than when you play a game and you feel throughout the game that the other team is better and you’re not good enough.

“But that’s not how they feel. They feel they can compete with any team in any league in the world in terms of performance. But the reality is we’re not performing to Liverpool’s standards.”

‘It’s all about results’: Slott says Liverpool need to improve after a difficult start to the season

Slott made a dream start to his Liverpool career, winning the league in his first season after being given the difficult task of replacing Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds also topped the Champions League last season, facing eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout.

However, they have already lost twice as many league games this season as last season, and two of their four losses in 2024-25 came after winning the title.

Liverpool’s inconsistent form has even led to calls for Slott to be sacked by some in the fanbase, with the Dutchman believing this season has been his “toughest ever” as manager.

“All the other seasons I’ve managed have been positive. I don’t think we’ve ever lost two games in a row,” Slott said.

“This season is an exception for me and it’s an exception for the players as well. They’re not used to losing a lot, they’re not used to drawing a lot. I’m not used to that either.”
