Brian Mbeumo speaks eloquently about former manager Ruben Amorim’s Man United side

The Cameroon international forward’s goal against Spurs was his third in four games under the new manager, but Mbeumo believes things were not as bad under the previous regime.

It wasn’t his cleanest strike, but it was a game-changer and one that brought big smiles to Michael Carrick and his coaching staff. Brian Mbeumo then scored his third goal in four games under Carrick with a set-piece special. He is certainly enjoying life under the man who is only a short-term manager for now.

Carrick have now celebrated four wins, with the team scoring 10 goals in the process. In their last four Premier League games, Manchester United have won just one game, scoring five goals in the process.

While it certainly looks like a very impressive comeback, Mbeumo believes it is not as dramatic as many would like to say. Mbeumo clearly believes they have made some progress under Ruben Amorim.

“I don’t think it was as bad as a lot of people felt, so I feel like we’ve built on what we’ve been doing since the beginning. We just stick together and try with great mental strength and we’re never going to give up. Even if someone gets passed, we’re just going to come back and support and give our best.”

Mbeumo now has 10 goals in all competitions since joining from Brentford for £71m in the summer, with his latest goal coming from a short corner routine that was also part of Jonny Evans’ training regimen. Carrick praised Evans’ work, but Mbeumo admitted things didn’t go to plan on his first try.

Mbeumo said: “Johnny Evans came to me and the players and we just tried to hit it. We did it once and it didn’t work. But this was the most important thing.”

Mbeumo scored shortly after Spurs captain Cristian Romero was sent off, and another carnival-like affair took place at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes sealing the victory. The feel good factor is definitely back.

The Cameroon striker said with a smile: “The fans are a huge community and you feel it when you step on the pitch. We want to make them happy so we just try to use the energy they give us and do our best.”

Mbeumo is clearly determined not to get carried away with United’s form. And that applies to his manager as well.

Despite the excitement of winning four races on the spin, aside from the odd moment or two, Carrick appeared calm and collected in the technical areas. At the level of his animation, he is definitely not Pep Guardiola.

Carrick explained: “I think it’s just about managing the moment. I don’t think I have to look a certain way. I’m not interested in that. For me, it’s not a performance.”

“I think it helps you make clear decisions. You’re trying to understand how the match is happening. There’s definitely an emotional side to it.

“I’ve tried to make myself look a bit silly in some of the celebrations with certain goals so far, but that’s part of football and you have to enjoy the moment at certain times. But there’s definitely another effort to be calm and thoughtful and to be calculating at the right time.”

His calm, thoughtful approach has certainly paid off, and that’s how he’s determined to continue, saying, “We’re not riding high. We’re not expecting everything to be great. We beat it, you know? We’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’re very aware of that.”
