Michael Carrick has made a good start in Manchester United’s dugout but has downplayed the possibility of him remaining as the club’s head coach beyond this season.
Michael Carrick has insisted Manchester United cannot afford to make “opportunistic” decisions over the managerial job and, as far as he is concerned, “nothing has changed” regarding his chances of winning the job permanently.
The former United midfielder and coach was handed a contract until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was sacked last month and has had a huge impact on winning his first three games in charge and boosting the Red Devils’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
Following back-to-back wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham, there is growing talk that Carrick could be asked to remain in his post beyond the 2025-26 season.
But Carrick, who spent two-and-a-half years at Middlesbrough before being sacked last summer, says the result has not changed his mind about his future.

“Nothing has changed, no,” he said in this week’s pregame press conference. “Honestly, it doesn’t change what I do or how I feel about it. I think I’m fully aware of the role I’m doing here and the responsibilities I have.
“We want to be successful. We want the club to be successful at the end of the season, whether it’s me or someone else.”
“We can’t control it at this stage, so let’s see what happens.”
Carrick also said that Old Trafford’s hierarchy should not allow results to dictate “opportunistic” decisions, even if it means he doesn’t get the job.
The plan was for United to oversee a thorough recruitment process to identify Amorim’s successor.
“Short-term results don’t change that,” Carrick added. “If they change it, something’s wrong. I’m not so nervous about whether it’s really good or whether there are some issues that need to be ironed out. It’s really steady progress.”
“You know football can twist and turn quickly as well, so we have to stay level and stay focused on what we have to do.”
