After Chelsea lost away to Arsenal in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, Manchester United fans were immediately reminded of Alejandro Garancho’s pre-match comments.
Alejandro Garnacho has been ridiculed by Manchester United fans after his half-hearted pursuit of his former club backfired as Chelsea lost to Arsenal. Garnacho, 21, left United to join the Blues in a £40m move last summer but has struggled to find his footing at Stamford Bridge.
The winger was placed on United’s ‘bomb squad’ for targeting former Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim after last season’s Europa League final. When Garnacho finally achieved his dream of joining Chelsea, few United supporters were saddened by his departure.
On Wednesday, the Argentina international was hoping to help his new team come from behind to defeat Arsenal on aggregate in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Ahead of the match, Garnacho suggested Chelsea could win “perfectly”, citing United’s win at the Emirates as proof.
“Everyone knows how difficult it is to play there,” Garnacho told club media. “When we lost the first game, I saw a lot of people saying, ‘Yeah, but no one has won at the Emirates yet.’

“But I think I look at it a little differently now. For example, if Manchester United can beat them there, we can perfectly do it.”
Chelsea were unable to draw in the second leg, with Arsenal winning 4-2 on aggregate thanks to a late goal from Kai Havertz. On social media, fans quickly used the opportunity to bash Garnacho.
“How was that?” asked one United supporter cheekily. “I didn’t age well,” wrote another. “Who does he think he is?” a third was posted by X.
Another fan suggested Garnacho’s comments were typical of his personality, saying: “That’s an interesting comment to make when you just lost at home a few weeks ago. That’s Garnacho to you.”

Chelsea face bottom-of-the-table Wolves on Saturday and manager Liam Rosenior believes there were “encouraging signs” from their performance at the Emirates despite the loss. “There was spirit, unity and fight in the team,” Rosenior concluded.
“Now we need to see how we are after the setback. We need to react positively. We have a difficult game away against Wolves on Saturday and we need to see how we react to that.”
