Manager Ruben Amorim has decided not to talk about his sacking from Manchester United until the end of the season as he does not want to “distract” Michael Carrick. Following last month’s 1-1 stalemate at Leeds United, United suddenly opted to sack Amorim, with Carrick later taking over as interim manager.

The 41-year-old looked quite relaxed as he was spotted strolling the streets of Manchester with his wife after leaving prison. Footage also showed the player giving a warm welcome to reporters present, but those waiting for an official statement on his turbulent days at United face a long wait.

It is customary for sacked managers to issue a statement conveying a message of goodwill relatively soon after leaving office, but sources in Portugal have told the Daily Mail that Amorim intends to remain silent until the end of the season before discussing how things have rapidly deteriorated at United.

Amorim’s reason for the postponement is reportedly due to his desire not to damage United’s remaining campaign under Carrick. United’s interim manager will no doubt appreciate the gesture as he seeks to lead the club back into the Champions League and stamp his name on the permanent job.

At his final press conference, Amorim went on quite a rant, referring to a number of former United managers. When asked whether there was support from the board, Amorim said:

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the manager of Manchester United. That’s clear. I know my name is not Tuchel, Conte or Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United and this will remain the case for 18 months, or whenever the board decides to replace me.”

“That was my point. I want to be done with this. I’m not going to quit. I’m going to do my job until another guy comes here to take my place.”

“I just want to say, I’m not just going to be the coach, I’m going to be the manager of this team. I was very clear about that. It’s going to be over in 18 months and then we’re all going to move on.”

“That was the deal. That’s my job, not to be a coach. If people can’t stand the criticism of Gary Nevils and everything, then they need to change clubs.”

“Each department, the scouting department, the athletic director needs to do their job. I’m going to do my job for 18 months and then move on to the next step. Thank you everyone.”

Carrick has made an excellent start to his tenure in the dugout, winning games against Arsenal and Manchester City, and culminating in last weekend’s thrilling come-from-behind win against Fulham. United move up to fourth in the Premier League table with the most points from their last three games.

Such impressive form has led to doubts about Carrick’s potential to become Amorim’s permanent successor. Speaking ahead of the win against Arsenal, the player said: “It’s been about a week and nothing is clear yet.

“My immediate focus is on what’s going on right now. It’s important to me that the choices that myself and the coaching staff make are not knee-jerk reactions.

“I am responsible for what happens next. I have to make the right decisions. Over time, this problem will gradually be resolved.”

A final decision on the club’s next permanent manager is expected to be made, with Unai Emery, Oliver Glasner, Roberto De Zerbi and Carrick himself also being named.
