England will be based at a four-star boutique hotel outside Kansas City for this summer’s World Cup, despite playing group games in Dallas, New York and Boston.
The England team has decided to base their World Cup at a hotel outside Kansas City that calls itself “English Cottage.” The Three Lions entered this summer’s tournament as favorites and chose to host the tournament in a central location as part of their plan for success.
Group stage matches will be played in Dallas, New York and Boston, but Thomas Tuchel’s side will be based in the Midwest. They chose to be based in Kansas City, located in the heart of the United States, perhaps with an eye on the finals.
The team will be staying at the Inn at Meadowbrook, a four-star boutique hotel in suburban Overland Park, Missouri, according to the Daily Mail. The 54-room hotel describes itself as “intimate,” “thoughtful,” and “surrounded by parks and paved trails.”
Rooms start from around £197 per night, with more luxurious options costing more than £500, and it has great reviews, including a 4.9-star rating from 400 reviews on TripAdvisor. Located on the grounds of a former country club, it overlooks the lake and features a 24-hour gym, fire pit, restaurant, swimming pool, and hot tub, but surprisingly no golf course.

Some of England’s players are keen golfers and will have to venture outside the venue to indulge in their hobby at a nearby course. Both teams will be in Kansas City during the tournament, so there’s a chance they’ll run into players from the Netherlands and Argentina on the course.
Unlike England, both the Netherlands and Argentina’s group stage matches are played in Kansas City, so FIFA gave them a high priority for facilities. Tuchel’s side appear to have opted to be based in one location rather than travel, having booked the Inn at Meadowbrook for the entire tournament.
The World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, making logistics and travel arrangements a challenge. England have made hotel mistakes before during tournaments and are thought to have consulted their players before deciding on their approach.
In Baden-Baden, the infamous home of the 2006 World Cup, paparazzi continued to take photos of wives and girlfriends in nightclubs, a situation the team would most avoid. But there is also agreement that the other end of the spectrum, defined by Gareth Southgate’s sole selection of Repino for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, should also be avoided.
England appear to be seeking to strike a balance with this choice, which offers relative luxury and some protection from the public eye, similar to their choice of a hotel in Souq Al Wakrah for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Meanwhile, the Three Lions are requesting to use Swope Soccer Village as a training ground.
Although conveniently located about a 20 minute drive away, it has not yet been approved by FIFA. Swope Soccer Village is a £15m facility with nine pitches and a 2,000-capacity mini-stadium that has previously hosted matches for Manchester United, Manchester City, Stoke and Newcastle during pre-season trips to the US.
