Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero said it was a “disgrace” that his squad had no options for Sunday’s game against Manchester City.

Spurs were without 11 first-team players for this game, with only four senior outfield options on the bench, with Romero being sent off at half-time due to illness.

In an Instagram post, Romero praised his “incredible” teammates after coming from two points behind to secure a point, but criticized the team’s lack of depth.

“All my teammates put in a great effort yesterday. It was unbelievable,” he said.

“Even if I wasn’t feeling well, I wanted to help them, especially since there were only 11 players available. Unbelievable but true and shameful.

“We will continue to show up, take responsibility for turning this situation around, work hard and come together. All that remains is to thank everyone who has been there and always supported us.”

This is not the first time the Spurs captain has spoken out about issues at the club.

In January, Romero appeared to accuse some people at Spurs of telling “some lies” in a cryptic social media post after the 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, which was later edited out.

He questioned why “other people” were not speaking out about the club’s position, saying this had been going on “for several years”.

Spurs manager Thomas Frank said the next day that he and co-sporting director Johan Lange had had a “good conversation” about Romero’s comments.

“As a young leader, sometimes you make mistakes,” Frank says. “Of course it’s good to keep it in-house. Johan and I had a good discussion with him this morning about everything, and we keep it in-house.”

In December 2024, Romero criticized Spurs’ underspending compared to their Premier League rivals, stating that Spurs were lagging behind. “We need to recognize that something is wrong. I hope they realize that,” he said.
Spurs signed Conor Gallagher and Brazilian left-back Souza in the January transfer window, while also signing 18-year-old striker James Wilson from Scottish Premiership side Hearts on deadline day.
However, head coach Frank, who has been under intense scrutiny this season with Spurs in 14th place in the Premier League table, remains limited in his options within the squad, although he has been helped by a reprieve from the UEFA Champions League schedule after finishing the league phase in fourth place.

Regarding Romero’s illness, manager Frank said after the draw with City: “He struggled against Frankfurt, but he overcame it with a great captain’s performance. (Today) he suffered a little bit, but I hope it’s nothing.”

Meanwhile, Spurs striker Dominic Solanke allayed concerns, telling Sky Sports he was “fine” after limping off after scoring his team’s two goals in a second-half comeback.

Frank’s team have not won in six Premier League games since December 28. However, they were successful in the Champions League, winning five of their eight league games, losing only to European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

They return to action on Saturday against Michael Carrick’s in-form Manchester United at Old Trafford. It will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus.
