Liverpool have overtaken Chelsea in the race to sign Jeremy Jaquet. Verbal agreement reached to sign defender from Rennes in January blockbuster
Liverpool verbally agreed to spend £60m on Jeremy Jacquet in the January transfer window, but the player is not expected to leave until the summer.
For the past week or so, it has seemed like the French defender, who is highly rated in his homeland, could be heading to Chelsea wherever he is. However, Liverpool swooped in late in the day as talk of back-line reinforcements continued.
This came just a few months after they twice failed to move to England for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. However, they were unable to sign Marc Guehi at the end of the summer season and there were hopes that they would once again target the England defender.
However, they are missing out on a centre-half who leaves for Manchester City, which could be a motive for Jaquet’s move. There are some moving parts in the club’s backline that could be revamped over the next few years.
Ibrahima Konate’s contract expires this summer, and Joe Gomez is rumored to be on the move. Injuries contributed to the team’s struggle to continue defending. Mirror Football looks back at what’s happening at Anfield.

Liverpool have agreed to pay Jaquet a fixed fee of £55m, plus £5m in performance-related fees. Chelsea were also offered a similar contract, but the player himself chose Anfield instead of Stamford Bridge. He likely felt he would get more playing time with the Reds.
The deal has not been officially announced at the time of this writing, but medical checks were completed on Monday.
Another defender in Mor Tara Ndiaye is a lesser known defender, having joined from Amitie in a deal worth £1 million. Due to injuries to several players, including Jeremy Frimpong and Conor Bradley, there were rumors that the Reds might consider adding a full-back, but no such deal was finalized.

There is little room for retreat, at least for major companies. Dominik Szoboszlai admitted at the weekend that he did not believe contract talks were going in the right direction, but there is no suggestion he will leave Anfield. “It’s not in my hands. There’s no progress, but if a suitable offer comes along, we’ll see.”
Anfield stalwart Andy Robertson had attracted the attention of Tottenham, but the left-back has opted to stay as his future remains a hot topic until the summer.
James Norris, 22, has joined Shelbourne on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee. The club also dropped to the Football League with three of its young players on loan for the remainder of the season. Luke Chambers and Luis Koumas will join Charlton and Birmingham respectively as they head to the Championship. Defender Callum Scanlon has left for League One leaders Cardiff City, who are aiming for promotion to the second tier.
