Arsenal reached the last 16 of the Champions League with a perfect record, but Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City have both won more prize money in the competition so far this season.

Manchester City and Liverpool have both earned more than Arsenal in the Champions League so far this season, according to analysis published on Monday.

Mikel Arteta’s side have entered the last 16 with eight wins out of eight league games that ended last week, and are being touted as the favorites to win the league. Premier League champions Liverpool finished in 3rd place and City finished in 8th place, giving them an automatic spot in the last 16.

However, both City and the Reds have earned £84m in this year’s competition so far, just ahead of Arsenal’s £83.1m, according to data released on Monday by the respected Swiss Rumble Football Finance Blog. Arsenal outperform these two clubs on the pitch, but City and Liverpool have earned more money than they have so far this season due to their superior performance in Europe over the past decade when compared to the Londoners.

The 36 clubs in the league stage will each receive a starting fee of £16.1 million before performance-based prize money is added, which represents 37.5 per cent of the total amount distributed to clubs by UEFA. Earn cash for every win, draw, standings and spot in the last 16. That achievement alone is worth £9.5m to each club.

So, unsurprisingly, Arsenal topped the performance part of the earnings list, earning £35.1m, ahead of Liverpool with £31m and City with £28.5m. However, Arsenal did not perform well in the “value pillar” of Champions League revenue.

It is calculated by ranking clubs based on the value of a country’s media market, combined with the performance of individual clubs in Europe over the past five and 10 years in UEFA’s coefficient rankings. The ‘Pillars of Value’ represent 35% of the total amount shared by the 36 clubs.

City were the highest paid English club this season, receiving £39m, compared to Liverpool’s £37.2m and Arsenal’s £32m, according to Swiss Rumble calculations.

Chelsea’s total income in the Champions League this season has so far been calculated at £79.6m, while Tottenham are thought to have £72.7m. Newcastle’s income is currently much lower at £46.7 million, due to their lower coefficient ranking compared to the other five clubs in England and the fact that they face a play-off to reach the last 16.

According to Swiss Ramble, Bayern Munich are the highest-earning club so far across all metrics, with £86.6m to date.

There is still plenty of prize money up for grabs, with £49.8 million available if the Champions League winner also wins the Super Cup in August. Champions League finalists, semi-finalists and quarter-finalists will receive progressively less money than the winners.
