Last season, five teams qualified for the Champions League in the Premier League, and with England continuing to dominate this season’s UEFA rankings, they are on track to re-enter the league.
The Premier League has had a record number of teams this year, with six teams competing in the Champions League, which is due in part to the success of the Europa League, as well as an impressive coefficient rating.
And as things stand, with England being the standout nation in this season’s tournament, they could be further up to sixth place in next year’s edition, as the latest rankings paint an impressive picture.
Points are awarded for wins and progress in various UEFA tournaments. So with five English teams going straight into the last 16 of the Champions League and one team, Newcastle, making it to the play-off round, things were looking pretty rosy. That’s before you consider Aston Villa’s impressive progress in the Europa League.
With the Champions League revamped and the introduction of more teams, Europe’s two best-performing leagues this season will gain additional spots, with countries typically taking four to five participants.
This means that fourth place, which has been coveted by many Premier League clubs for many years, has now become a desire to finish fifth. And that looks like enough for this year’s England team.

All nine teams in England are still in the hunt for the trophy in European competition. Six teams from the Champions League, Villa and Nottingham Forest in the Europa League look on track to qualify, while Crystal Palace are all but certain to progress to the next stage of the Europa Conference League.
Therefore, this not only paints a good image, but also means that with continued involvement, English clubs can accumulate wins and, as a result, coefficient points.
England’s results this season show just how far ahead of their European rivals they are. At the time of writing, Germany are in second place and will be the fifth team in next season’s Champions League, but still face stiff competition. Their ranking may be determined by how deep players like Bayern Munich can go in the tournament.
Portugal, Spain and Italy are all in hot pursuit and we’ll be looking forward to additional European teams next season. France have fallen further behind, but could still have a big say, especially with Lyon and Strasbourg performing well.
They are top of the Europa League and Europa Conference League standings respectively and could pick up important points if they make it all the way to the end. PSG is likely to have a say in the Champions League as well.
