Raheem Sterling is officially a free agent after Chelsea confirmed his departure on Wednesday, giving him five days to sign with a new club before the transfer window closes.
It’s finally over. Raheem Sterling is no longer a Chelsea player. Sterling, 31, will be released from his £325,000-a-week contract and will be free to join a new club.
The Blues released a statement on Wednesday confirming the news, which everyone had expected during Sterling’s exile this season. The forward was first frozen out in August 2024 and quickly returned to the spotlight following a loan spell at Arsenal.
However, upon his return to Chelsea, the club’s stance had not changed, so he began training with their “bomb squad”. Sterling had the chance to leave in the summer, with the Blues signing him on loan with both Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen.
However, the former Liverpool star wanted to stay in London and be closer to his family. Now that the nightmare at Stamford Bridge is over, Mirror Football has selected five clubs for Sterling to join before Monday’s deadline.

Fulham
Fulham, Chelsea’s closest neighbors, could sign a star player like Sterling to solidify their European ambitions. Marco Silva’s teams have looked much the same over the past few seasons, and consistency has paid off.
The Cottage are seventh in the Premier League and have a good chance of qualifying for the Europa League or Conference League, while the term ‘Champions League’ has even been whispered about. Sterling brings a wealth of experience having played in Europe and will specifically replace Adama Traore, who has joined West Ham.
crystal palace
January was a memorable month for Crystal Palace. A humiliating defeat in the FA Cup, the sale of captain Marc Guehi, manager Oliver Glasner doing dirty laundry in the media, and no Premier League wins – something needs to happen for the Eagles to soar again.
So what about Sterling? Palace have already brought in Brennan Johnson to strengthen their attack, but the signing of the 31-year-old will surely give Glasner’s side an even greater chance of avoiding a relegation battle, as they currently sit eight points above the drop zone.

west ham
When it comes to relegation battles, West Ham are in the thick of it. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side’s winning streak has boosted their hopes of staying, but they remain in 17th place and at risk of being dropped from the Premier League for the first time since 2011.
Sterling will link up with former England teammate Callum Wilson, adding depth to a front line that is starting to develop. West Ham have been willing to splash cash in recent years, so his potential wage demands may be less of a problem compared to Palace or Fulham’s budgets.
brentford
Sterling was at the top of his game when Brentford were promoted to the top flight in 2021. Sterling, a key player for both Manchester City and England, would have been laughed out of suggesting he could actually be signed for free by the Bees just five years later.
Admittedly, the four-time Premier League winner is not the model signing for Brentford, but the arrival of Jordan Henderson, one of Sterling’s friends from his England days, shows that Keith Andrews’ side are comfortable bringing in an established star player under the age of 30. Sterling, who has failed to score in his last two games, could be just the player Brentford need as they chase Europe.
newcastle
Finally, head outside London for the unlikely move all the way to Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side are also fighting for goals, with the squad once again strengthening as they compete on all fronts.
The Magpies have progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals and the FA Cup fourth round and can qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League if they defeat holders Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. The addition of Sterling will give them the pedigree they need to go deeper into various competitions and establish themselves as top-five regulars after an indifferent first half of the season.
