Camp Nou underwent a £1.25 billion renovation, but fans, journalists and the president were drenched as rain entered the stadium during Sunday’s match.
Barcelona’s recently renovated Camp Nou was soaked by fans, journalists and even president Joan Laporta as heavy downpours invaded the stadium.
The iconic stadium is undergoing a £1.25 billion refurbishment and although the team will move in in November, parts of the venue are still undergoing renovations. The return to the Camp Nou was delayed by a year due to construction, but those who attended on Sunday were soaked wet.
Barcelona saw off Real Oviedo, but rainwater poured into parts of the stadium. One video shared on social media showed a stream of water falling through an opening and onto a concourse. The rain covered the sidewalks, forcing reporters to wear waterproof jackets and carry umbrellas to protect their laptops.
Spanish media outlet Tribuna reported that Laporta and other VIP guests were drenched despite sitting in company seats and were not protected from the elements.
Some of the 45,000 fans in attendance are thought to have left the game early, perhaps because the stadium’s deficiencies were exposed and they were soaked by the Spanish rain.

Despite this, Laporta looked on the bright side and is confident that they will solve any problems. “Everyone got wet. We knew it could happen, but in the end it rained with victory. It was like witnessing a baptism of rain at the Camp Nou. The stadium is under construction and anything that needs to be fixed will be addressed on site,” he said.
“This is normal and will be resolved. The stadium is progressing at a good pace and everything is going well. License 1C (increasing the capacity to 62,000 people) was supposed to be ready at the beginning of January, but it has been delayed. ‘Now, let’s see if we have it against Mallorca. I haven’t given up yet.’
The club faces a race against time to finally complete the work to recoup lost revenue. Camp Nou’s capacity will increase from 99,000 to 105,000 supporters, significantly increasing the club’s matchday revenue.
Barcelona played their final two seasons at the nearby Estadi Olympique Lluis Company, which was the venue for the 1992 Olympic Games, after construction began at Camp Nou in May 2023.
In recent years, Real Madrid have played at the renovated Bernabéu, giving the capital’s stadium a completely new modern look. The venue is currently located on a rooftop and has previously been recognized as the world’s best stadium by the World Football Summit (WFS).
