Manchester United look a different team under Michael Carrick – telling Ruben Amorim where he went wrong
Ruben Amorim will be sitting somewhere shaking his head. I wonder how he could watch the team he once coached win a game he had no right to play.
He saw Manchester United defeat two of the title favorites, despite not being able to beat Leeds, Wolves or West Ham when he was in charge.
We wonder how Casemiro looks world-class again, Harry Maguire remains one of England’s best centre-backs, and how on earth Patrick Dorg suddenly became a modern-day version of Roberto Carlos.
And who is this Koby Mainu guy in midfield? Where has he been hiding all this time? If Amorim is still mourning the loss of his job as United manager, the past week must have been quite painful for the Portuguese manager.

Because it took until now for someone to expose the obvious flaws in his management methods. Everything that interim manager Michael Carrick did, Amorim rejected. He chose the right formation and the right players.
The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Dorg and Amad Diallo have no qualms about doing what is asked of them. United have structure both in attack and defense.
They pose a threat with the ball and look disciplined without being out. Carrick gave the team a plan that the players understood.
The players are motivated again, a clear reflection of how bad Amorim’s decisions were during his unsuccessful spell as manager.
But we should expect Amorim to learn a lot about himself from his traumatic experience in Manchester. That he has to be less stubborn and more flexible.
Be willing to admit when you’re wrong and change your approach. Don’t be too honest with the media. And when you’re blessed with a talent like Mainu, don’t ignore it.
Amorim believes that football should be played a certain way and is likely to stick to these philosophies.
But if he wants to be a great manager, he must use his obvious shortcomings to his advantage. Embrace people like Carrick made mugs for you.
And use this fact to move forward smarter and stronger.
