Ruben Amorim has not been well-received by Manchester United’s academy players and their parents, but it is understood they are excited to see Michael Carrick take charge.
Manchester United’s academy star and his parents were excited to see the back of Ruben Amorim, who criticized the young player system and made little use of the next generation.
Michael Carrick has been appointed to replace him until the end of the season, and his appointment has been well-received given his understanding of the club and its traditions, where the use of academy players is an important part of the club’s DNA.
Amorim rarely relied on the academy to utilize his talent, despite the club’s poor form throughout his tenure. His attitude and sporadic use of Koby Mainu were a concern for the midfielder, who was previously a big hit under Erik ten Hag. After that, his playing time decreased, and the possibility of a loan transfer emerged.
In December, the Portuguese manager slammed United’s young stars, including strikers Chido Obi and Harry Amass, claiming: “As a club, we sometimes forget who we are and that’s how I feel. It’s all about the environment, it’s the players’ moments and I understand they are kids who feel entitled.”
Carrick’s addition is now seen as a big plus. The former midfielder’s son plays for the U16 team and his parents, who are involved in the set-up, believe he will gain a deeper understanding.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Carrick has watched his son grow up and has become a regular at the training ground. He is a friendly, welcoming guy who always has time for everyone. People respect and admire him because of his career at United, but having a son in the academy is a big deal. I also feel that I understand what that means.Amorim’s comments left my parents stunned.Anyone in professional football knows how difficult it is to have a career at any level of football, let alone at United.”
On Tuesday, Carrick and his coaching team watched United’s under-21 team play Sporting Lisbon. Darren Fletcher, who coached United for two games as interim manager after Amorim’s sacking, has also been highly praised by academy parents.
The source added: “He is well-respected and well-regarded by the children and parents. It’s great for parents to hear Darren Fletcher shouting their son’s name during a match because he knows his talents and weaknesses.”
Players such as JJ Gabriel and Kai Rooney are ranked, with the former receiving particularly high praise.
Since 1937, United have consistently featured academy players in their matchday squads, and have now done so for over 4,300 games.
