Michael Carrick made it 2-2 for Manchester United in the 3-2 win over Arsenal in the Premier League, but Roy Keane is still not convinced he is suitable for the role of permanent head coach.

Roy Keane has told Micah Richards that Michael Carrick is being “stupid” after asking whether he is suitable for the role of permanent head coach at Manchester United. The Red Devils thrashed Arsenal 3-2 in a drama-filled match at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night.

As a result, Carrick has remained unbeaten in his first two games as United manager, having been brought in on an interim basis until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim’s sacking earlier this month. But former club captain Keane is not convinced the 44-year-old should be considered for a permanent deal at Old Trafford.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday coverage after the result, Richards asked: “So do you give it to Carrick?” Then Keene, with a stiff face, replied: “Work? No, I’m doing something stupid right now.

“Yes, two great performances…anyone can win two games. That’s what he’ll do at the end of the season. Even if he finished fourth, I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the right man for the job. Absolutely not.”

“I still think they need a bigger and better manager, but he has an opportunity – what an opportunity it is for him, and you know what, he takes it as very fair play.”

Carrick, however, remained positive throughout, telling the media after the game: “I’m enjoying it. It’s a great position to be in. I’m not going to answer every week what’s going to happen next. I’m having fun and I’m going to continue to do what I can.”

It was a great night in north London for Manchester United, who moved up to fourth in the Premier League table and one step closer to qualifying for Europe after a 3-2 victory over leaders the Gunners.

It was an impressive start for Arsenal. Arsenal put intense pressure on the visiting team from the start. They conceded an own goal in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martinez allowed a clearance inside their own six-yard box, inadvertently setting the tone for what would ultimately turn out to be an intense game filled with drama.

However, Arsenal’s advantage did not last long. About eight minutes later, Declan Rice’s inaccurate pass was returned towards David Raya, but it was intercepted by Brian Mbeumo, who quickly got past the shot-stopper and fired a shot on goal.

Five minutes after the break, Patrick Dorg found the back of the net with a superb volley from the edge of the area as United looked to hold a 2-1 lead for the rest of the game. Mikel Merino managed to equalize with about six minutes left in regular time, but his efforts were ultimately for naught and were nullified just three minutes later.

That’s because Matheus Cunha curled past Raya to seal the deal with United and drive off in celebration. Carrick and United’s next game is a week later at home to Fulham. Meanwhile, Arsenal continue their pursuit of European glory as they face Kairat in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
