Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has refused to apologize for comments that sparked a war of words between defenders Lisandro Martinez and Nicky Butt.

The defender hit back after Scholes’ comments in which he questioned Martinez’s ability to deal with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. After helping United keep a clean sheet against City, he invited Scholes to his home for a ‘face to face’ chat.

Mr Scholes responded on social media: “Tea, no sugar please.” Scholes’ former teammate Butt also told Martinez, “Grow up.”

Mr Scholes provided his latest reaction to the situation. He admitted that he probably didn’t make the comment in the right way, but refused to apologize.

When asked by Jamie Carragher in the Overlap fan debate whether he had earned any money for his comments on his podcast The Good, The Bad and The Football, Scholes replied: “No. “No comment. I didn’t realize how many Argentinian friends I had until this week. Shit, I’ve gotten some benefit from them, yes. But, you know, that was my opinion.”

“You know what? What we said probably wasn’t good in retrospect.”

Asked whether he was retracting his comments, Mr Carragher replied: “No, I’m not apologizing, no. What we were trying to say was – what we thought – and still is. Physically, it’s a mismatch.”

“Now, look, the way we described it probably wasn’t great and probably shouldn’t have been, but still: It was a (mismatch). He had one good match (smiles).

“How many, two? I hope he proves me wrong, but look at Danny Welbeck against Brighton the week before that, look at Burnley the week before that, he gave away a goal against Burnley.

“I understand why he was upset about that. So I say maybe we said it in not so nice terms. And look, I hope he proves me wrong.”

“He had a great game against City, he was great, but we now have to look at it throughout the season and then again on Sunday, it’s a big game for him.”

Internet personality and United fan Adam McColla asked: “Are you aware of the impact of your words when you say them? Or is it just ‘me and my mates having a chat’?”

Mr Scholes responded: “There really wasn’t that much. There’s probably been a lot of backlash against it since their comments.”

“The word you use is toxic, and I think a lot of people have probably put that label on me and Nicki over the last few days, and that’s not what we want to do.

“We want to see the team win, we want to see the team succeed every week. Remember when we were playing and when Jamie was playing, we certainly took some criticism.

“I think people are speaking their minds probably more now than ever before, and we have to deal with that.

“You have to realize that you’re probably – no, definitely – one of the biggest clubs in the world, and you’re going to accept some criticism, especially when the club isn’t going as well as it has in the past, or when it looks like it’s going to go well.”
