Manchester United enjoyed a big win against Manchester City last weekend and manager Alan Shearer believes the Red Devils can finish the season on a positive note under manager Michael Carrick.
Alan Shearer believes Manchester United can qualify for the Champions League under manager Michael Carrick, but only if they maintain their current high standards. The former Red Devils midfielder took over last week after being appointed as Ruben Amorim’s replacement until the end of the season.
Carrick enjoyed a dream start to his return to Old Trafford as United beat local rivals Manchester City 2-0. The win moves United into fifth place in the table, one point behind Liverpool.
Shearer has been full of praise for Carrick’s influence so far, but told the Red Devils’ stars not to drop their efforts anymore. He told Betfair:
“He stayed at the club for three days and made some adjustments to the system and to the individual. I appreciate what Ruben Amorim thought when he saw that performance. It was as if someone had flipped a switch. The energy and aggression was incredible.”

“That has to be the norm now. It took a bit of luck for Mbeumo and Amado to come back in the nick of time and for Dalot to avoid being sent off, but the level of performance was key.
“There is no doubt that Bruno Fernandes is a talented player. He may not be the best in the world, but as a ’10’ he has done a great job for United. You wonder where the team would be without him.”
“Carrick made a big decision to take Cunha out, bring him in and bring Maguire back into the back four. Everyone was screaming for it. Bruno is a great player.”

United are back in action this weekend when they travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on league leaders Arsenal. Shearer suggested his team could beat Mikel Arteta’s side and secure a top-four spot if they showed the same determination.
He added: “We play Arsenal this weekend, which is a change from City, but that doesn’t have to upset them. United always have big results in big games, but they’ve lacked big performances. Last week was both.”
“Whether they can go to Arsenal and win is another question, but if they show the same desire they will be fine. Two draws against City and Arsenal would have been good, but now they have three points.”
