Tottenham hope to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool in the January transfer window, encouraged by Arne Slott’s recent plea for more game time.
Tottenham are in contract talks to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool after the left-back expressed dissatisfaction with a lack of game time. Robertson has fallen behind Milos Kerkes in Liverpool’s pecking order and Spurs will be hoping to take advantage of that in the January transfer window.
The 31-year-old is in the final five months of his current contract with Liverpool and recently admitted he could leave for more regular appearances. The Reds signed Kerkez from Bournemouth in the summer and the Hungarian international is now the preferred option for left-back Arne Slott.
Robertson received an offer from Atletico Madrid in the summer, but ultimately ended up staying to compete for a place in the starting XI. According to The Athletic, Spurs were due to move on to sign the Scotland international after his contract with Liverpool expires on June 30, but they have been encouraged to bring forward their plans.
They are currently in “friendly negotiations” with Robertson’s agent and Liverpool with a view to a deal this month. Liverpool are understood to be business-minded given Robertson’s free departure in the summer and could bring Kostas Tsimikas back from Roma to cover for Kerkes if necessary.

Tottenham remain interested in Robertson despite announcing on Thursday night that they had signed Souza from Santos for £13m. The 19-year-old left-back was described by manager Thomas Frank as “one of the brightest left-backs in the world” in a club announcement. Spurs have already named Destiny Oudogie, Jed Spence and Ben Davies as options at left-back.
Robertson’s decision may therefore depend on where Frank sees him in the left-back pecking order. He hopes to play regularly ahead of Scotland’s campaign at the World Cup in the summer.
“We’ll see what happens,” Robertson said recently about his future. “We’re having a chat right now but it remains private. I’ve spoken to them and we’ll see what happens. Do I want to stay? Yes, but it’s a difficult question to ask. I have five months left and I need to consider whether there is an option to stay or something like that.”
“I’m going to sit down with my family and make a decision. After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being part of it and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve achieved that. I need to figure out what I want for myself and my family going forward.”
The slot is open over Robertson’s situation. “I think I had to give him (Robertson) a lot of credit for what he said. He was very mature and understood everything he said,” Slott said in response to his confession.
“Any player who doesn’t start every game should feel the same way, but I’m really happy to hear that he’s happy with the position he’s in and he understands how important he is to this club and always has been. “He hasn’t played as well as I expected, but what he said in the media was a big compliment.”
