Paul Gascoigne suffered injuries including broken ribs and a punctured lung after falling during the festival, leaving the former Newcastle hero fearing he might die.
Paul Gascoigne admitted he thought he was going to die as he cried while in hospital after falling over the Christmas period.
The England icon revealed he fell backwards while trying to hang something, but the fall had serious effects and required extensive treatment. Mr Gascoigne, who suffered six broken ribs and punctured several lungs, feared his life would end and sought reassurance from doctors.
He told Clutch 9: “I was obviously in pain and they gave me painkillers and I felt my neck grow bigger. I was panicking so they took me straight to the surgeon. And the surgeon came in and I said, ‘Please, please, please tell me I’m not going to die.’ And he said, ‘I’m not going to tell you, but you should have signed for Manchester United.’
“Then he left the room! My cheeks were swollen and my eyes were raised so I didn’t know where he went. And I was like, ‘Please, tell me.'” I saw my dad in the clouds and I really panicked. I’ve had 38 surgeries, so it doesn’t usually bother me that much, but this time it was really tough. I said, “Get me a surgeon.” The scales fell from my eyes and I was crying! ”
This is not Gazza’s first health scare, most recently in June when the former Tottenham and Newcastle star was found unconscious in his bedroom in Poole, Dorset by a friend and rushed to hospital. The 58-year-old man was admitted to the intensive care unit, but was later transferred to the acute care unit.

Gascoigne was one of the game’s great mavericks and remains one of England’s most talented players. He admits he has struggled to watch too many games these days as he is still desperate to lace up his shoes and play, but Newcastle remain on his side.
“I don’t watch much football because I wish I could still play,” he claimed. “At this age, even after all these surgeries, I still miss playing. So, yeah, it was fun watching Newcastle play. I’m more of a fan.”
The playmaker was part of the England team that reached the last four at the World Cup, their best result at the World Cup since 1966. He achieved that record in 1990 and believes the current group can finally end the wait this summer.
“We’ve been saying since 1966 that we were going to win the World Cup,” he said. “We have the players to do it. I think when you come to the World Cup, especially the quarter-finals and semi-finals, all the players have to give their best. You can’t put anyone on your back, because the team right now is getting stronger and better. We have the players to win the World Cup.”
