Mason Greenwood’s international career has stalled for several years
Mason Greenwood’s success at club level has not been replicated on the international stage. The former Manchester United striker has proven to be one of Ligue 1’s most powerful finishers since signing for Marseille in 2024.
The 24-year-old won the league’s Golden Boot award last season alongside Ousmane Dembele, with both of them scoring 21 goals. Greenwood has continued to perform well in front of goal this season, leading the league with 12 goals and 20 goals across all competitions.
In 2022, before moving to France for £23 million, Greenwood was charged with rape, assault and controlling/coercive behavior, but the charges were later dropped. Mr Greenwood denied all allegations.
During his time at United, he was seen as a player who would be a star for club and country for years to come, even making his England debut in 2020, earning his only Three Lions cap.

However, legal issues ended his career with England and he has not yet been recalled to the team. Ahead of Euro 2024, former national team manager Gareth Southgate made it clear he would not consider signing Greenwood, and current manager Thomas Tuchel previously admitted he was “not considering” Greenwood.

The German said last year: “I have not spoken to him so far. I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding is that he is trying to play for Jamaica, so we did not think about it. He is not in the squad at the moment and he is not thinking about our team.”
Greenwood has submitted paperwork to switch his international eligibility to Jamaica, but has yet to make his international debut despite being predictably included in Jamaica’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago last September.
Greenwood, who scored 42 goals in 62 games for Marseille, is definitely a bargain for the French giants, with his Champions League win last season costing United an extra £5m.
Greenwood’s financial victory could yet continue for the Red Devils, who included a whopping 40 per cent sell-on clause in his contract with Marseille. If the Ligue 1 side were to sell him, United would receive almost half of the proceeds from the transfer fee.
After helping his side to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in November, Greenwood will be in the mix again this Wednesday as Liverpool travel to the Stade Velodrome. The striker has only scored once in five games against the Reds, with his only goal coming in United’s 3-2 win over their rivals in the 2021 FA Cup fourth round.
