Jamie Carragher couldn’t help but make a cheeky diatribe when Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards’ recent lucrative Netflix deals were mentioned on air.
Jamie Carragher has slammed former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker after he signed a huge deal with Netflix. Lineker left the BBC in May, ending 26 years at the helm of Match of the Day, and is now focusing on his podcast, The Rest is Football.
The former England striker was due to host the BBC’s 2026 World Cup coverage, but has completely severed ties with the broadcaster. Retirement isn’t such a bad thing for Lineker, who will instead be working at Netflix during the summer’s World Cup.
Netflix has signed a deal with The Rest is Football for the tournament, which will reportedly see Lineker earn more than the £1.35 million he earned at the BBC. The deal is a boost for Lineker’s podcast co-stars Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, and is thought to have sparked jealousy from rivals.
The topic came up on Tuesday night’s CBS Sports Champions League broadcast, with reporter Anita Jones saying, “Mika, I hope you send me some of your Netflix money.”

The former Manchester City defender laughed off the suggestion, so Jones added: “I didn’t get an answer, but are you going to send me some of the Netflix money or what?”
Carragher was also in attendance, with Richards describing the show as “absolutely the number one pod in the UK”. Carragher then said, “Oh, you signed a deal with Netflix for a podcast that no one listens to? Honestly, I don’t know anyone who listens to it!”
According to a recent report from Edison, ‘The Rest is Football’ is the fifth most listened to podcast in the UK and the most popular sports-related podcast. The overlap, which includes Carragher, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott, is number 17 on the list.
The Rest is Football will be released daily during the World Cup and will be filmed in New York by Lineker, Shearer and Richards. Lineker said the Netflix deal was “a great opportunity for all three of us to do what we love – talking about football every day – on a truly global stage.”
It will include “match analysis, special guests, interviews and insights on the world’s biggest sporting events.”
Lineker co-founded Goalhanger, a production company that produces The Rest is Football and numerous other successful podcasts. The company recently announced that it has surpassed 250,000 paid subscribers across its networks and receives 70 million episode views per month on audio and video for its 14 scheduled shows.
