Liverpool manager Arne Slott was asked about rumors that former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso could become the club’s next manager after leaving Real Madrid.
Manager Arne Slott has responded to rumors that Xabi Alonso could be linked as Liverpool’s replacement following the Premier League champions’ disappointing season.
The Dutchman led Liverpool to the title in his first season in charge after replacing Jurgen Klopp, but things have been even more difficult for Slott and Co. this season, with some supporters booing the team after they failed to beat struggling Burnley at the weekend.
Alonso was heavily linked with the Reds job when manager Klopp announced his intention to leave the club in the summer of 2024 only to remain at Bayer Leverkusen. He joined Real Madrid the following summer but was sacked last week after less than seven months at the helm of the Spanish giants.

His availability has led to speculation that he could take up the role at Anfield, a comment he made in Slott’s pre-match press conference on the eve of Liverpool’s Champions League game against Marseille.
“He called me and said it would take over six months! No, no, no,” Slott replied. “This is one of the weirdest questions I’ve ever been asked: What do you want me to say?
“I’ve been working here for 18 months and I love what I do here. We won the league and obviously we’ve struggled even more this season. There were boos…well, I might have heard some, but not that many, but it’s normal for no one to be happy when you draw with Burnley.”
“But once people got home, maybe they thought (it was too much), but the emotions calmed down.”
