England are in the midst of preparations for the 2026 World Cup, but the Three Lions have been told to consider playing in the tournament following Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
Manager Piers Morgan has told the FA to reconsider England’s participation in the World Cup following President Donald Trump’s tariff threat. The US president recently announced that a number of European countries, including the UK, will be subject to tariffs on goods imported into the country.
This comes amid President Trump’s efforts to acquire Greenland, which is currently owned by Denmark. Trump claimed on his social media platforms that Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark and the United Kingdom have all visited Greenland in the past for “unknown purposes” and would be subject to tariffs.
The plan has already faced opposition from many world leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer. And with the United States set to host this summer’s World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, Mr Morgan suggested that countries affected by the tariffs should withhold their participation in the tournament for the time being, a suggestion that could put him in a stalemate with his friend Mr Trump.
“Shouldn’t England, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Norway and Italy all suspend their participation in the World Cup while various tariff negotiations with President Trump continue? Some interest may be focused on 8 of the 10 favorites withdrawing,” he said on Twitter.

There is currently no suggestion that England are considering qualification for the World Cup. The Three Lions begin their campaign against Croatia on June 17th, with further group games scheduled against Ghana and Panama.
Manager Thomas Tuchel recently gave insight into how he selects his squad, saying: “If you talk to the players who played in the World Cup, first and foremost it’s always been when the connections between the players were right, when the communication was right that made the difference.”
“So when the players feel like they have the right group going into camp, understand their role, why they’re in camp, what’s expected of them and that they’re going to be happy to be together, even though the tournament could be going on for another four weeks, they’ve been successful.”
“After the round of 16, they were already feeling like, ‘Oh, when are we going to go home?'” And they didn’t make it because the energy wasn’t right. This shows that you need to make the right choice.
“It’s not just about talent, it’s also going to be very important to look at what you want in a player. What are his social skills? Is he a good teammate? If his role might be a support role, can he support you? So that’s the focus.”
