Marc Guehi has declared he has joined England’s best club after his £30m move to Manchester City. The England international arrived in Manchester on Sunday by private jet to sign a contract and undergo a medical. Guehi has signed a deal worth at least £200,000-a-week, which will keep him at the Etihad until 2031.

Guehi will miss Tuesday night’s Champions League game against Bodø/Glimt, but is expected to make his debut against Wolves this weekend. The 25-year-old admitted he turned down a number of other clubs to join City, citing Josep Guardiola and the chance to win trophies as important factors. Guehi was close to joining Liverpool in the summer, but he added salt to the Reds’ wounds by declaring he had joined the best club in the country.

Upon his arrival, he said: “I’m really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player. This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I’ve put into my career. I’m now at the best club in England and part of an incredible squad of players. I’m delighted to be able to say that.”

“I want to develop as a player and as a person and I know that will happen at this club. I love football and it has given me so much for a long time. Being able to continue my development at Manchester City is a really special moment for me and my family.”

“I can’t wait to start now. I want to meet my teammates, train hard, understand what the manager expects from me and show the City fans what I can do.”

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, also sympathized with Liverpool, claiming Guehi is a “huge” talent who will greatly improve the title challengers.

“Marc has clearly been one of the best defenders in English football for a long time and we are really pleased that the decision has been made to bring him to Manchester City.”

“We feel we have signed a great person who will help us improve. He is only 25 years old, but he has already shown that he is a leader, a great professional and someone who is eager to improve.”

“He is strong, has exceptional defensive qualities, reads the game intelligently and brings passion and energy every time he steps on the pitch. Marc is in the prime of his career and any City fan will be looking forward to seeing how great he can be in a sky blue shirt.”

Guehi has won 26 caps for England and is expected to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for this summer’s World Cup in the United States.
