Donald Trump threatens to impose tariffs on Britain over Greenland issue

Donald Trump is once again making international headlines with his latest threats against the UK and other countries. He continues to pursue the idea of acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island, for national security purposes. It is currently owned by Denmark, which strongly opposes the idea of handing it over to the United States.

President Trump has not ruled out using military force as a means to take control of Greenland. It is strategically important given its location between North America and the North Pole, making it well-positioned for an early warning system in the event of a ballistic missile attack. President Trump also cited the obvious threat from rival powers, saying, “If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will take it.”

His main issue concerns Denmark, but in recent social media posts he claimed that Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom had visited Greenland for “unknown purposes”.

As a result, President Trump said, the aforementioned countries would be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the United States.

His announcement has left many soccer fans wondering whether England and Scotland should boycott this summer’s World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

This story takes place a few months before the World Cup is held in North America. Preparations for the tournament were already overshadowed by U.S. military action in Venezuela earlier this month.

It remains unclear how the UK will respond to US tariffs, but pulling England and Scotland out of the World Cup would be a big statement. It’s an unlikely scenario, but something strange happened…

Trump added, “The United States has been trying to do this deal for over 150 years. Many presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused.”

“Now, thanks to the Golden Dome and modern weapon systems, the need to acquire both attackers and defenders is especially important.

“Hundreds of billions of dollars are currently being spent on security programs related to the Dome, including the possibility of Canadian protection.

“This is a very nice system, but a very complex system that can only work to its maximum potential and efficiency when this land is involved because of the angles, distances and boundaries.

“The United States stands ready to enter into negotiations immediately with Denmark and with these countries, which have so much at stake despite all the measures we have taken over the decades, including maximum protection.”

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer has repeatedly called on President Trump to respect Greenland’s sovereignty. He pushed back against his U.S. counterpart on Sunday, reportedly telling him by phone that imposing tariffs on NATO allies is “wrong.”
