Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick made the perfect start to defeat Manchester City but warned his players they must stick to it
Michael Carrick has praised his dream start to life as Manchester United’s caretaker manager after leading the club to a thrilling derby victory at Old Trafford. Carrick watched as United crushed Manchester City in their best performance of the season.
Second-half goals from Brian Mbeumo and Patrick Dorg stunned Pep Guardiola and his flop. And Carrick admitted his first game in charge could not have gone any better.
“It’s a great start. There’s no getting away from it. Before the game, we talked as coaches and said the players are in a good situation.”
“City are an unbelievably good team and teams change that so you have to go for plan B and C. But to go that well, the players were great in a lot of ways. Yeah, pretty good.”
Carrick revealed how the players got a lot of motivation from the loud cheering of the home crowd. But he warned that United had set the standard for the rest of the season.

Carrick hopes to get the results he needs to have a chance of securing a permanent job. He added: “I think the players hated it. They left the dressing room incredibly desperate to do well.
“I said this could be a magical place. I hope this is just the beginning. We’re not too crazy. That’s the challenge now. It needs to be some version of normal.”
“Certainly we’re not going to play the game with the same emotion and emotion as we did today, but there are standards that we have to meet.
“Consistency is the key to success and if we can see we are close to winning. We have another big game next week (against Arsenal) and we have a good foundation to build on.”

Guardiola made no excuses and acknowledged that the best team won. And while he insisted Diogo Dalot should have been sent off for a brutal challenge on Jeremy Doku in the first half, he did not want to blame the result on the poor decision.
He said: “The better team won. They were better. When a team is better, you have to accept that. They had an energy that we didn’t have. So congratulations (to United).”
“We have a duty to analyze the whole game – and they were better. You could say it was a red card, it was a different game after that. It’s easy for me to come here and say it should have been a red card.
“It doesn’t matter. If it’s about winning or losing games, we won’t grow. To win, we have to do better.”
