Liverpool 1-1 Burnley: Dominik Szoboszlai misses a penalty, ending Liverpool’s fourth consecutive draw in the Premier League
Liverpool’s season continues to be a long one, with the beleaguered champions losing at Premier League level for the fourth year in a row.
However, unlike their recent hard-earned points at Arsenal, the Reds left the Anfield pitch distraught and booed by some of the home fans after Burnley missed a first-half penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai, a motivated but limited Reds side.
Liverpool have struggled to break down teams coming to Anfield looking to get as many players behind the ball as possible, but the Reds were starting to look like a team looking to set the record straight.
Szoboszlai introduced Milos Kerkes behind Kyle Walker in the early engagements, but the full-back opted not to shoot and instead aimed at Curtis Jones to no avail.

At the other goal, Florentino Ruiz scored Burnley’s first goal, troubling the Kop even more than Alisson Becker, but normal service was soon resumed as traffic backed up.
Martin Dubravka combined well with Florian Wirths to dive down the left to deny Hugo Ekitike’s fierce drive and score the first of several impressive stops in the first half, but Ryan Gravenbirch deflected his shot from distance wide.
The lively Kerkes proved to be a nuisance for Burnley’s team on Liverpool’s left flank, linking up with Kodi Gakpo before his cross was volleyed goalwards by Jeremy Frimpong, but was brilliantly blocked by Lucas Pires.
But there was already a feeling that the Burnley Dam was about to burst, and it looked like it would do so just after half an hour.
Luiz’s challenge on Gakpo was more clumsy than malicious, but after referee Andrew Madley pointed out the spot, Szoboszlai, fresh off a sublimely ridiculous game against Barnsley in the FA Cup, hit the spot-kick against the crossbar.
But if Burnley were hoping the Hungarian’s mistake would dampen Liverpool’s morale, they were wrong. Wirtz and Gakpo soon produced two more good saves from Dubravka and the German had the breakthrough.
Ekitike expertly twisted his way around Axel Tuanzebe on the left and the center dropped to Jones, before the Reds midfielder played the ball to Wirtz for his fourth goal in seven games.
It was a well-deserved goal for Liverpool, but after a similarly dominant start to the second half, the old demons that ruined their season set in.
The Reds’ slow play allowed Edwards to concede a center moments earlier, but the center was sent towards his own goal by Ibrahima Konate, who made a good save from Alisson.

But the lesson was not learned and Luiz soon found Edwards again in wide-open space, allowing the Burnley attacker to straddle and fire an impressive shot into the bottom corner.
Arne Slott looked stunned, but he and the Reds were complicit in their own destruction.
Trying to fight back, Szoboszlai, perhaps better aware of the damage he had done by missing the penalty, headed wide and drove straight towards Dubravka, creating a golden chance for Alexis Mac Allister to go over the bar within seconds of his appearance as the slot shuffled through the pack.
Liverpool wanted a winner that they would have gotten in possession but not in execution, and that didn’t happen.
Burnley held on for just their 14th goal of the season, and the Reds reached the same conclusion as always.
