The result gives Arsenal the opportunity to build a nine-point advantage at the top of the table when they face Nottingham Forest on Saturday night. Guardiola could be nearing the end of his 10-year spell at City, with the Spaniard previously hinting at a move away from Manchester.
Despite signing a new two-year contract in November last year, which runs until 2027, doubts remain as to whether he will fully fulfill the agreement. There are now suggestions that Guardiola could step down as soon as this week.
Speaking on beIN Sport, Keys made a surprising claim about Guardiola’s future after United’s defeat.
He said: “I think it’s definitive that he left at the end of the season. But don’t rule out the possibility that he leaves this week. This week. If he leaves this week, (Enzo) Maresca will be in charge against Wolves.”
“City will have a stroke and of course they will deny it, but in his head they are telling him to leave this week. He often does things like this so you can’t read into him too much, but this time he can.”
“It doesn’t affect me at all, because I know it’s 100% speculation. I don’t have time for something like this at the moment, because first of all, I’m under contract here until 2029,” he said in December.
However, Maresca parted ways with Chelsea earlier this month and is now out of a job after Liam Rosenior took over his role at Stamford Bridge.
It remains unclear whether Maresca will be able to take up a new managerial job immediately after leaving Chelsea, given that there may be clauses or agreements in the terms of his departure that could prevent him from becoming manager of another club.
Maresca coached under Guardiola at City before starting his managerial career at Leicester and later joining Chelsea.
After the defeat at Old Trafford, Guardiola didn’t say a word about his team’s performance, admitting that they deserved to lose. “They were the better team,” Guardiola admitted.
“They had something we didn’t have. I’ve been here many times, but today we weren’t at the level we need to be to win these kinds of games. We had that energy four days ago against Newcastle, but we didn’t have it today.”
“It wasn’t a bad performance. We didn’t get the result. That happens often. It was a football game and they were the better team.”
