Manchester United are reportedly in talks with a ‘mystery midfielder’ over a potential loan deal until the end of the season, and Mirror Football has narrowed down the candidates.
Manchester United are in a fluid situation, with rumors flying around in the January transfer window. Michael Carrick will be interim head coach until the end of the season, after which there will be major changes to the club’s hierarchy.
Ruben Amorim was sacked earlier this month and the club are currently looking for a way forward after yet another failed appointment. Carrick is a stopgap until the summer, when Amorim’s long-term successor is hired and the squad is revamped.
One area of concern was central midfield, where Amorim was unable to find the right balance in a 3-4-2-1 formation. There are concerns over the future of captain Bruno Fernandes, with Casemiro expected to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires.
United are eyeing Brighton’s Carlos Baleva, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as dream summer signings. However, according to reporter Ben Jacobs, they are also considering a move this summer.

It has been suggested that United have recently held talks with the ‘mystery midfielder’ over a potential loan move until the end of the season. The player is believed to be based overseas but also has Premier League experience.
The bait was successfully fooled on social media, with United fans playing detective and using the parameters given to uncover the player’s true identity. Here we will list four players who meet the criteria.
Ruben Neves
The vast majority of desperate United fans named the former Wolves midfielder. United had been linked with a move for the Portugal international before he left Wolves for Al Gilal in 2023, but the excitement has returned.
Al Hilal reportedly paid £47 million for Neves in what became one of the Saudi Professional League’s biggest coups. He is considered one of the highest-paid players in Saudi football and could be available as his contract expires in the summer.
Neves is only 28 years old, has 21 goals and nine assists in 171 Premier League appearances, and could have the added advantage of tempting Bruno Fernandes to stay and play alongside his national team-mates. However, it seems highly unlikely that Al Hilal would accept a loan deal rather than a straight transfer, as they have a £20m price tag on him.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek
This seems quite possible. Loftus-Cheek wants to play more games as he aims to make England’s World Cup squad, and AC Milan, who signed Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot and Samuele Ricci in the summer, are willing to allow Loftus-Cheek to leave.
Aston Villa, who missed out on Conor Gallagher’s move to Tottenham, are reported to have made an offer for Loftus-Cheek. The 29-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in 157 Premier League appearances, both at Chelsea and on loan at Fulham and Crystal Palace.
weston mckennie
The American international also has Premier League experience, although he moved on loan to Leeds United in 2023 and made just 19 appearances. He has been frequently linked with a move away from Juventus, but he is finally starting to secure a place in the team.
According to Jacobs, McKennie has attracted interest from two Premier League teams, Atletico Madrid and an Italian side. One reason for this is that his contract is due to expire this summer and he could be available for around £10m. He may not be the most exciting signing for United, but he ticks a few boxes.
matt o’reilly
O’Reilly is currently on loan at Marseille from Brighton, playing for the French club and has made 22 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing six assists. Fabian Hürzeler’s departure from the Seagulls in the summer was a bit of a surprise as he could not guarantee a regular starting spot.
The 25-year-old Denmark international has fared better at Marseille, but he also hasn’t settled down for Roberto de Zerbi. Nevertheless, it seems very left-field for Brighton to agree to recall him and send O’Reilly on loan to fellow league rivals.
