Liverpool had previously signed a deal for Guehi on deadline day in September, initially thought to be worth £35m, but Palace pulled out with 11 hours to go as they were unable to secure a new centre-back. Despite the setback, the Reds maintained their interest in the player and were preparing to sign him in the summer, when the England international was expected to attract interest from a number of clubs.
However, City need to urgently address their injury crisis at centre-back, leading them to pursue Guehi, with Palace accepting a transfer fee rather than risk losing the 25-year-old on a free transfer in the coming months.
The Liverpool Echo understands that Liverpool view the signing of Guehy this month as less of a market opportunity than they did last September or this coming summer, and are therefore unlikely to change their stance against a late attempt to outbid City.
Glasner, who also confirmed he will step down as Palace manager at the end of the season, said on Friday afternoon: “My understanding is that the contract with Marc is in the final stages. It hasn’t been finalized yet, but as a result, Marc will not be playing for us.”
“As I said a few weeks ago, I was pretty clear: every player has a price depending on their contract and whether we want to do it or not. If a player says, “I want to move,” it looks like it’s going to happen right now.”
“Everyone wanted Marc to stay permanently, but the reality was different. I spoke to him, it’s just between us, but I think Marc showed that in the summer transfer window. Throughout the season so far, he has given 100 percent effort.”
“I wish him the best in his career. He’s going to have a great career. He’s still in the early stages and has a great future.”
