Oliver Glasner has announced his intention to leave Crystal Palace at the end of this season in a shocking press conference. The Austrian, who led Palace to their first-ever trophy last season, is on the radar of Manchester United following the sacking of manager Ruben Amorim.
However, in the same press conference, Glasner dealt Palace fans a double blow by confirming that Marc Guehi would not be in the squad for Saturday’s game against Sunderland. It comes as the defender, who has six months left on his contract, inches closer to joining Manchester City on a reduced fee.
The 2025 FA Cup winners are in a bit of a bind, with Glasner saying: “The decision was already made months ago. I spoke to Steve (parish president) in October during the international break. We had a very long discussion and I told him I would not be signing a new contract. At that point we both agreed that it was best to keep this a secret between us. So it would be best to keep it a secret for three months.”
“But it’s important to be clear right now and we didn’t want to talk about it because we had very busy schedules. Steve and I want the best for Crystal Palace. I told Steve that I’m looking for a new challenge.”
“That’s how I feel after everything. I told him in October that it has nothing to do with the transfer market. I don’t like to hear things written that aren’t true and it’s difficult for me to respond. We have a great relationship and we always talk about what’s best for Palace.”
The departures of Glanser and Guehi, also increasingly likely, would be the latest in a string of high-profile departures for the Eagles. Manager Glasner also confirmed his departure at a press conference, saying, “I can’t confirm (the latest information) from the club. It’s not over yet. But as a result, Marc won’t be playing for us tomorrow.”
“I spoke about it a few weeks ago. I was pretty clear. For every player, it depends on the contract situation, but when a club says they want to move, there is a price to pay. When a player says they want to move, a deal is done. Now it looks like that’s happening. Everyone wants Marc to stay forever and play as Crystal Palace captain, but the reality is different.”
