Jurgen Klopp remains linked with Real Madrid despite previous claims that the former Liverpool manager is done with management after linking up with Red Bull Soccer
Jurgen Klopp’s decision to swap the touchline for an office at Red Bull’s football headquarters was always intended as a move to keep him out of the spotlight after giving his all to Liverpool for almost nine years.
The former Anfield main man explained that he was “running out of energy” in a heartfelt farewell announcement, suggesting he badly needed a break from the relentless pressure of Premier League management.
Barely two years after making those comments, on Monday night Klopp found himself at the center of another storm while working as a commentator on German television when news broke of Xabi Alonso’s sudden departure from Real Madrid.
Unsurprisingly, Klopp’s colleagues at ServusTV were quick to criticize the man who, ironically, has become synonymous with an elite club looking for a new manager since he quit coaching. Especially Real Madrid.

Klopp’s straight bat response appeared to be a move to stick to the status quo and distance himself from the role. The party’s policy over the past 12 months is that Germans are not interested in management positions.
And just hours later, Sky Germany claimed that Klopp would “seriously consider” the Bernabéu vacancy if Real Madrid called him up in the summer. And frankly, who could blame him?
After all, Klopp himself has just hinted that he hasn’t completely closed the door to management. “I said I would never coach another team in England, which means (if Klopp returns) it will be Liverpool,” he told the CEO Diary podcast.
“Well, in theory it’s possible. I love what I do now and I don’t miss coaching. I don’t. I mean, I’m a coach, but I’m not a player, it’s just different. And I don’t miss it.”
Not everyone took his words as gospel, but most now believe there is at least a chance that the decorated former Borussia Dortmund manager feels he has one more job to do.
And while a second spell at Liverpool, forever revered by the Kop, may seem unlikely at the moment, it’s not too difficult to imagine Klopp wandering the touchline again in a tracksuit rather than some cozy office.
Then, things start to get interesting when you consider that the appeal of the Real Madrid job is unparalleled in club football and was previously outlined as one of the few roles that could be enough to force manager Klopp back into management.
Given Klopp’s age and current role, this could very well be his last chance to return to the game, so to speak.
After all, his resume is impressive, but no one can forever enjoy past glories, and the next crop of coaches is already distinguished. Time waits for no one and soon Klopp will be seen as the man of yesterday.
Indeed, the days of Klopp being debated for the top job should already be over, given that he has indicated he has moved on to the next stage of his career. Eventually it will become a reality.
So if any of Klopp’s managers are keen on the chance to coach Real Madrid, even if the current situation is less than ideal, it would be worth exploring. And there will certainly be no interest from Los Blancos.
We’re only a few weeks into 2026, but the world of football has already seen some significant and surprising management changes. I’m sure there will be even more changes by summer. Klopp’s unexpected return story wouldn’t seem out of place already.
Yes, Klopp may be content within the confines of the management world. As highlighted earlier.
But all things considered, could he actually say ‘no’ if it was Real Madrid rather than his friend who would blow up his phone in the coming months?
Only Klopp knows the answer. But if he says no this time, it’s the end for arguably one of Liverpool’s all-time great players.
