Manchester United’s new manager, Michael Carrick, agrees with Sir Alex Ferguson’s view that Coby Mainu is the lifeblood of the club. Former United midfielder Carrick was announced as interim head coach on Tuesday and will remain in the role until the end of the season. The 44-year-old was appointed following the sacking of United manager Ruben Amorim last week, who had been in charge of United for three games in 2021 following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

The shape and style of United under Carrick remains to be seen. However, his past statements suggest that the young Mainu may be ready to return after being sidelined. Mainu’s rise to prominence at Old Trafford under manager Erik ten Hag has been nothing short of spectacular, with the academy graduate playing a pivotal role in the 2024 FA Cup victory over Manchester City. However, the Stockport-born midfielder found himself sidelined under Amorim, who often overlooked Mainu despite lacking midfield options.

The 20-year-old reportedly considered leaving United, but could find redemption under Carrick, especially given the manager’s previous comments. Last year, in a conversation with fellow United legend Rio Ferdinand, Carrick was asked whether he would build a midfield around Maynou.

Michael Carrick reflected on the importance of academy talent at Old Trafford, saying: “Well, I think the club needs players who have come through the academy, who know the club, who have a feel for the club… I think Man United need that element, it has always been done and it should always be like that.”

“To have a talent like Maynou, which he has already shown, you need a player like that (on your team), a player who can say, ‘They understand. They know it. Let’s help them and stick with them.’ I think there’s definitely a place for him there.”

These comments followed speculation about Koby Mainu being linked with a summer move to Napoli, with manager Ruben Amorim reportedly vetoing such a departure. Carrick’s views echo those of United icon Sir Alex Ferguson, who built his dynasty on the foundations of the famous ’92 squad.

The legendary Scot highlighted the important role of homegrown talent in preserving United’s DNA when asked about Mainu and the recently departed Alejandro Garnacho in 2024.

Sir Alex told TikToker Jamal Niaz: “It’s the foundation, right? It’s been the heart and soul of Manchester United since the days of Sir Matt Busby, who started the whole process of trusting young players and playing.”

“They’re young. What they’re showing now is the poise and confidence to play in the first team and not be daunted by it. In a way, it shows the kind of courage they have. That’s the difference between people, and some people have the will to be[fearless at a young age].”

Carrick’s plans to utilize Maynou are yet to be revealed, and he envisioned using the young player in an attacking midfield role, especially given his previous comments about Ferdinand. Carrick said: “He’s more of an attacker. I don’t see him as a holding midfielder. He’s a player above the line who needs a little more freedom.”

“He can defend a high line, but I think it’s a little different playing a little bit deeper around the centre-backs. I see him playing and creating in that little bit higher position. I think he has a big future. I really like him. He just needs that patience and a little bit of rest.”
