West Ham are eyeing the possibility of losing their place in the Premier League and the club’s current stars will see their bank balances hit if the Londoners drop to the second tier.
If West Ham are relegated from the Premier League, the players will face a 50 per cent pay cut. Londoners have endured a harrowing season this season.
They sit in 18th place, seven points from safety heading into this weekend’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo was replaced by Graham Potter at the start of this season and is already under huge pressure.
And while the Portuguese’s job is at stake, the Hammers’ dressing room appears to be feeling the impact if the club slips into the Championship. According to The Athletic, players have clauses written into their contracts that cut their salaries in half in the event of relegation.
It’s a rule the Hammers have always followed, but it has become even more important this season, with the club winning just three league games. It has been suggested that this clause makes it difficult for West Ham to sign their January target.
They have already signed two new players. Strikers Tony Castellanos and Pablo were acquired from Lazio and Gil Vicente respectively. Captain Jarrod Bowen has already sent a shout out to his West Ham team-mates.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s FA Cup win over Queens Park Rangers, he said: “If we give up, we don’t have a chance in the world and that’s the way we should think. We know this season hasn’t been good enough and we’re far from good enough, and we’re in a position to show that.”
“It was a combination of things. I don’t think it was the effort, I don’t think it was the work. I think we’re a team that works hard and wants to do well, but I think in the end we weren’t at our best individually and as a team, and we were punished for that.”
“We are seven points ahead going into the second half of the season, but we know the situation at stake, we know what we have to do and we have to do it. We have to continue to be a team that fights every moment we are on the pitch. We have to keep fighting and we have to keep fighting to win games. That’s the only way things can change.”

Bowen added: “I will never begrudge the fans their opinions because they are part of football and they have supported this club for longer than I have been alive.
“We’re in a very privileged position in the Premier League, so for me, I’m going to keep trying to improve my form, keep trying to help the team as much as I can, be the best captain I know I can be and do everything I can to get back to the good times.”
“I like to think of myself as an honest and hard-working person, so all I can do is apologize for the current situation and work hard to improve. It’s up to me and up to us as players to do that.”
